Book Study and Reflection
International Baccalaureate Schools promote intercultural understanding and respect. We're planning on hosting our first all-campus book study and reflection this year. We've been looking for a book that brings to life the International Baccalaureate (IB) mission statement, the Middle School Vision Statement, and aligns with the district mission and Strategic Plan. (link to these statements)

The title that's been selected is Flying Lessons and and Other Stories, edited by Ellen Oh. Ms. Oh is the cofounder of We Need Diverse Books. Common Sense Media rates the book at 5 stars and includes a brief summary:

"WHAT'S THE STORY?
In FLYING LESSONS AND OTHER STORIES, 10 celebrated authors create short stories for kids in a variety of genres and reflecting a variety of perspectives. Some stories focus on sports or family; others weave magical folktales; some have heartache and triumph. Each story features characters of different ethnicities, genders, orientation, family makeup, and more, but those differences are not what's highlighted. Kids' common dreams, pain, family struggles, and excitements are conveyed in each story, giving every reader -- whether the character looks like the reader or not -- something to identify with, learn about, and explore." Click here to see the book review done by Common Sense Media.

Hennepin County Libraries has several copies and will be reserving them for our students. Our SLP MS library has a number of copies on hand as well but for families/students interested in reading the book we also encourage you to consider securing a copy for yourself. We are trying to get 100 copies to share with interested kids through Donor's Choose. See the project called All In, All Reading! We'd like our first reflection/book study to start the first week of November. We'll communicate more details in the future on this.

Contribute To This Year's Yearbook
St. Louis Park Middle School has new advisers for the 2018-19 yearbook.  We, Maria Johnson and Lisa Becker, are excited about the opportunity to help gather memories for your students, but we would love to have your help!
The best yearbooks are filled with many photos of a variety of events and students; learning, performing, competing and having fun. We have an easy way for you to share photos of our Middle Schools students in their co-curricular activities, so that we have many to choose from.
Our yearbook company, Josten’s, has created RePlayIt, a free app to share photos with us. You can find it in the App Store or in Google Play Store to download to your mobile phone. We gave it a try and it works great!  All we did was download the app, registered with St. Louis Park Middle School and took some photos to share. Thank you for helping capturing the moments of our students’ year!
Cultural Attaché
Cultural Attaché:
Is your child proficient in more than one language? Would they like the opportunity to develop the attributes of being caring, a risk-taker and a communicator? The Middle School is looking for students who would be interested in becoming cultural attachés for our school. As a cultural attaché they would be responsible to share what they know about the culture of our Middle School with others using a language other than English.

Definition of the SLP Middle School Cultural Attachés:
Students interested in enhancing cooperation and communication on our campus between current members of our campus, new students and visitors; enhance cultural understanding (competence) and world language use. Represent the culture of our Middle School campus while developing deeper understanding of other cultures, using language other than English.

If your child is interested in becoming a Middle School cultural attaché or just interested in finding out more, please fill out this Google Form before October 30th, 2018. Students will also find the link to the Google form on Schoology and on the Middle School library media center home page.

Thank you for your interest!

We are an authorized International Baccalaureate World School! What makes an International Baccalaureate (IB) School stand out? One reason is that we develop and foster community relationships that benefit our students.

Binder Buddies
Parents and Guardians:

Many times I am asked if there is anything that as parents and guardians, you can do to assist or help with here at the Middle School. An opportunity that comes along three times each year is Binder Buddies. This occurs the first Friday of quarter two, three, and four to help students get organized, discard any worksheets or items they don't need anymore from quarter one, repair their binder and supplies if possible, and if not, provide students with new supplies or a new binder.

If you are able to volunteer to assist with students organizing their binders and supplies, the first Binder Buddies event is Friday, November 9. Click here to sign up.

We also welcome donations for supplies and we have some of our Site Council fundraising go to Binder Buddies but can struggle to support a student body of over 1,000 students and want to help any student who needs assistance with this. Some items we always need are pencils, pens, binders (3-inch only), binder dividers, notebooks, loose leaf paper, and pencil pouches.

If you have any gifts to donate, either supplies or financial, please bring them to our front office and just say it is for Binder Buddies.

Thank you,

Jason Boll
Assistant Principal

DonorsChoose
Did you know that there is a way you can help teachers in our building make cool things happen? You can directly impact the materials and resources our kids have with your social media help or your financial donations. Ask your kids if they like using the Hokki stools in the school, or the standing desks, or the various games found in different OT classes. Most of those items have come from teachers writing grant requests on DonorsChoose. This site allows teachers to write a request for items they have on their wish lists for their classrooms. Things that the teachers think will help your kids. Please check out the various projects our teachers have posted and think about donating or sharing on your social media accounts! We have teachers looking for basketball jerseys, for books for the whole-school reading project, for fitness bands to teach international connections, so many ideas! Our school has funded 63 ideas so far, help us keep it going!
