Harvesting squash early to save it from the deer!

Farm Notes:

Can you believe we are already into the second week of October? Where did the summer go? Now, some days feel like fall, while others still feel like summer. We are now picking the tastiest corn of the season. I've always felt that a slower growing late season corn has more to it than the fast growing summer corn. Sure the summer corn is sweet, but the late season corn is bursting with flavor.

Cool fall temperatures often trigger a plant to begin storing energy and nutrients for the winter. The plant seems to now have the time to slowly bring the varied nutrients from the soil into its fruit. In the heat of the summer, the plant needs to move such a large amount of water from the soil through the roots to the upper part of the plant, just to counteract the transpiration. All this water movement in summer can sometimes lead to lower concentrations of nutrients. But the fall harvests usually prove to be some of the most flavorful and nutrient dense. Who needs vitamins when you can have wonderful fall harvests! And this year's fall harvest looks wonderful. In past years the deer did quite a number on our winter squash, while this year they seemed to be eating our lettuce and beans all summer instead of the winter squash. Every year is different! And this year is wonderful in its own way. As we continue to harvest bins and bins of apples, this week we will get all the winter squash harvested and begin the potato harvest. The size of this year's potatoes look like some of our biggest yet. Time to roast!
