APPRENTICESHIPS AT SMEs: HOW TO WORK WITH PROFESSIONAL HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTION?
Embracing the  apprenticeship culture  and starting an  apprenticeship scheme  in a company is not difficult. However, it might not be very intuitive for an SME who has never done it before, so below are a few hints:

Focus on your needs

Potential partners are educational organizations that can provide apprentices that match the apprenticeship placements you open. Look at your list of knowledge and skill gaps: In which kind of educational organization are these knowledge and skills taught? Which education level and technical/scientific area? In which study programmes? Write them down. If you face difficulties to find educational organizations, you can contact their national regulatory body or association and they will help you or browse the Learn2Work database of educational organizations to find potential partners (www.learntowork.eu).

EURASHE CONTRIBUTES TO THE SELECTION OF NEW MEMBERS OF THE UKRAINIAN ACCREDITATION COUNCIL
Last week 22 new members of the National Accreditation Council (hereafter-Council) were selected in Ukraine. The newly formed Council marks the achievement of the Selection Committee work which was also comprised of E4 members-EURASHE, EUA, ENQA, and ESU.

The importance of the Selection Committee is considered to be significant since the former Accreditation Council had lost its credibility in the public eye and higher education sector due to its lack of transparency, integrity, and honesty. The current Selection Committee had a responsibility to set higher selection standards and nominate 23 members of the Council who fully meet the position's requirements.

SUPPORT THE QUALITY OF INTERNSHIPS AND BECOME A SPONSOR

Internships play a key role for young people's integration into the labour market. They are essential in bridging the skills gap between education and work. However, many internships do not fulfil their purpose as they are badly designed. To remedy this, the SPRINT project aims to create a norm with standards and indicators for quality internships that can be recognized and accepted by employers.

To reach a successful completion of the programme, the 7 project partners are looking for organizations that might be willing to sponsor specific elements of the work that needs to be done.
On the SPRINT website you will find some more background information about the project, as well as an overview of the various sponsorship packages. In case you have any questions please contact us.

A NEW ERA FOR PORTUGUESE POLYTECHNICS
In 2019 Portuguese Polytechnics celebrate 40 years of existence. The recent national legislation, namely Decree Law 65/2018 which was published last August, opens a new era for Polytechnics in Portugal. The government finally recognises  the capacity of Polytechnics to award students with a PhD degree, complementing the programmes delivered by Universities in a national binary system.

This change in higher education landscape has its roots in a recent report from OECD, "Review of the Tertiary Education, Research and Innovation System in Portugal" that recognizes  the research  capacity of Polytechnics and their experience in doctoral education in close cooperation with Universities. In expert words "... some programmes or schools within polytechnics have significant research programmes, host or participate in R&D centres, and collaborate in training or hosting doctoral students from Spanish or Portuguese universities. Growing relationships between universities and polytechnics in the training and hosting of PhD students and the widening participation of polytechnic researchers in R&D Centres and Associated Laboratories together point to emergent model (or models) of doctoral education for polytechnic institutions."

BECOME A HOST OF THE 30TH EURASHE ANNUAL CONFERENCE
We are looking for an Association of Higher Education institutions or an Institution of Higher Education
to host the 30th EURASHE Annual Conference, which is scheduled to take place in spring 2020.
Why host the 30th EURASHE Annual Conference?
  1. Expand the reach of your Association or Institution. A successful conference could be an excellent opportunity to showcase your organisation to others, gather attention on social and traditional media.
  2. Get access to influence makers. Our Annual Conferences always attract top leaders from the EU institutions, national and international policymakers, business representatives. EURASHE is always willing to introduce and facilitate networking between a hosting institution and relevant stakeholders by organising bilateral meetings before or during the Conference.
  3. Establish a leadership. Hosting EURASHE Annual Conference will establish your organisation as a driver of new
ideas and ensure cooperation opportunities at the national and international level.
  4. New Ideas. The foundation of any good conference is an excellent programme. According to EURASHE28 Annual Conference's survey results, almost 88% of respondents believe that they will use the information obtained through the Conference very significantly or significantly.
  5. Opportunity to present your city and culture. EURASHE Annual Conferences always include a social programme which is an outstanding opportunity for a hosting organisation to organise study visits, city tours and present the culture and the history of the city or country.
Conditions and requirements are here. For more information, please contact EURASHE Secretariat.

MONTHLY INSPIRATION
Does  competition always lead to efficiency, creativity and generation of new ideas?

It seems that higher education institutions could be an exception, at least according to entrepreneur and author Margaret Heffernan.
'This competition has led to "weird" behaviour, including student plagiarism and academic fraud. This is what happens when you put systems under competitive pressure," she says. "Winning becomes so important that if you can't win the right way, yo u find other ways. In that respect HE is very similar to sports: the higher the stakes, the higher the level of cheating and corruption.'
