The Escondido Chamber of Commerce Education Committee is hosting the first
Connecting Business with Education Summit on Wednesday, October 3rd at 7:30 am. The summit, sponsored by Erickson-Hall Construction and Newland Sierra, will provide businesses in the Escondido area with valuable information about
educational resources for internships, job placement, training and
certification through high school and adult education.
Tech and trade skills are vital for a strong, diversified workforce, and there are many career opportunities in Escondido where High
School graduates can begin with a certification, verses a four year
college degree. This ability to earn while you learn can lead to a
successful and rewarding career path, and that avenue will be a topic at the Summit.
The Summit will also showcase the trades that Escondido High School students are learning, such as culinary arts, auto shop, computer drafting, lab tech, nursing, metal fabrication and welding.
A panel of prominent Escondido employers will be speaking about the skills and experience needed for a rewarding career, including Matt Pound, General Manager, Weir Asphalt; Greg
Provance, General Manager, Vintana Wine + Dine; and Tina Pope,
District Manager, Service Excellence, Palomar Health.
When asked "What skills are important for entering your field of work?" Greg Provance from Vintana Wine + Dine said "A strong work ethic and sincere desire to learn, grow and improve is crucial. We are good at training the right people, but coming from an environment where they have a proven track record, backed by experience and industry recommendations are great." Vintana Wine + Dine is involved with Orange Glen High School's culinary arts program and routinely offers real world skill development opportunities for the students.
It takes a lot of people to run Palomar Health, which is the largest employer in Escondido, and not all of the positions require a doctorate. Tina Pope says "A strong work ethic, passion and commitment are the soft skills I am looking for when hiring. The hard skills can be learned, but the soft skills are critical for team building and patient care."
If you would like to attend the summit, registration is available online at https://tinyurl.com/CBWE-Summit. Breakfast is included and participants may also experience cutting edge education with an optional student led tour of Del Lago Academy immediately following the program.
