Principal's Message

Murwood Families,

What an exciting week!  We have professional developers from Teacher's College in New York here to help grow our skills and strategies around Reader's Workshop for 3rd-5th grades this week.  Next week, it's K-2nd grades' turn!

If you are among the generous team who have signed up as a  volunteer for our Fall Festival, Book Fair, Baking Brigade, or Room Parent, please check your email for an invitation to our volunteer coffee this Friday at 8:15 a.m. in the Multi Purpose Room. If you have always wanted to volunteer here, and don't know where to start, our Volunteer Coffee is the perfect place for you!  Come connect with our friendly team and find a place that is just right for your talents in all our upcoming events! This is a great opportunity to connect with your team and receive guidance from our event coordinators.  Coffee and pastry will be provided.

To continue our conversation from last week, I'd like to take a moment to address Unexcused Absences, Independent Study Contracts, and family vacations taken during the calendar school year.  If you are unaware, school funding is based on Average Daily Attendance (ADA).  ADA is calculated by taking the aggregate number of days of attendance of all students during a school year; divided by the number of days school is in session during that year.  So, funding is based on attendance, not enrollment. When a student misses school for a vacation or reason other than illness, in addition to the loss of opportunity for your child to learn, it also impacts our funding.  Independent Study Contracts (ISC) play into that because oftentimes, students do not complete the work agreed upon, making us ineligible for the funding promised by an ISC.

We cannot stress strongly enough the importance of your child being in school all day, every day.  Dentist and ortho appointments are hard to come by, but now, with late start Wednesdays, you have an opportunity to do that without missing out on learning.

To put this in perspective, last year, students missed almost 400 collective days of school due to vacations.  While we acknowledge some once in a lifetime opportunities, we also know that our school calendar provides ample opportunity and a year's advance notice with which to plan your trips around school.  Hopefully, your message to your family about school aligns with ours:  Students belong in school all day, every day, on time.  It's what's best for all children.

October is Creek Safety Month

In support of the Contra Costa County Flood Control and Water Conservation District's ongoing efforts to educate the public on creek and channel safety, the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors has once again declared this October as Creek and Channel Safety Awareness Month.

This annual campaign is to remind us that we must become aware of the seasonal dangers around us and take the necessary steps to educate ourselves and our children to avoid them.

Pies!  Pies! Pies!

Murwood Elementary is selling pies for a fundraiser  to help support Murwood PTA.

This year, the Murwood PTA is partnering with the Bay Area Rescue Mission to provide dessert to hurting and homeless men, women, and children in the Bay Area. The goal of the Rescue Mission's Food Pantry & Distribution Center is to keep people from becoming homeless by distributing food, clothing, furniture and other household items. They provide over 750,000 meals annually for the homeless and their shelter guests. Approximately 75 of our Pumpkin Pies will provide for just one day of desserts. Please consider making this holiday season special for those less fortunate.

You can also check the PTA website and  can see all the flavors and will purchase pies online.  The flyers were sent on in the Wednesday folders on October 3rd.
