UNITED STATES-MEXICO-CANADA AGREEMENT

In 1989, the United States engaged in bilateral trade negotiations with Canada, which led to the U.S.-Canada Free Trade Agreement. Two years later, bilateral dialogue was initiated with Mexico, where Canada joined. As a result, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) entered into force on January 1, 1994.

After 13 months of negotiations and the modernization of the agreement, presently known as the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), the trilateral relationship between the U.S., Canada, and Mexico is set to continue. North America and international trade experts from the Wilson Center in Washington D.C. have produced an analysis of the newly negotiated NAFTA (USMCA). The Wilson Center, chartered by Congress in 1968 as the official memorial to President Woodrow Wilson, is the nation's key non-partisan policy forum for tackling global issues through independent research and open dialogue to inform actionable ideas for the policy community.
