ABOUT THE SILENT SKIES MURAL PROJECT

Nearly one year ago, earlier this year we made a call to all AFC members to participate in the creation of  a collaborative "Mega Mural" composed of individual 8" x 8" paintings of the 678 endangered species of birds of the world. The 100-foot artistic creation, titled  "Silent Skies", will be installed as the artistic centerpiece at the Vancouver Convention Centre for the 27th International Ornithological Congress ( www.iocongress2018.org ) and for the 2018 Artists for Conservation Festival, August 22-25, 2018.  We are also working with several interested parties to tour the mural in 2019-2021.

Some key points about this project:
  • No entry fees to participate;
  • Raises funds for bird conservation;
  • Revenue opportunity for artists (from original/print sales) ;
  • Supports AFC youth education program;
  • Participate in the world's largest bird art installation and contribute to the centrepiece of the world's most important bird event;
  • International tour planned (2019-2021);
  • Opportunity for sculptors to participate.

Full details are online at the Silent Skies Artist Registration.  To register for the Silent Skies Mural project, follow these simple steps:

DEADLINE FOR COMPLETING ARTWORKS

The absolute latest date for completing all artworks for this project is July , 2018 (extended from May 1). This means that there are nearly 3 months left to complete and ship your work.

REFERENCE MATERIAL

Several members have inquired about where to find reference material. Others have declared their intent to commit, but are hesitating out of concern about the availability (or possible lack thereof) of reference material on their chosen subject.

Keep in mind - first and foremost - this is an ART project that allows for and encourages artistic interpretation. We are not compiling a reference or identification guide. It's a collaborative fine art installation. It can be impressionistic and not necessarily depict the entire bird. Arguably, the less reference material there is, the more latitude you might give yourself in interpreting.

Also keep in mind that MOST of the species are rare and tend to have limited reference material.  Thankfully, these days images on just about any species are readily available through a Google search, Wikipedia and  http://www.arkive.org/ - as reference material. Of course, unauthorized copying of protected images is a definite no-no and it is incumbent upon the artist to ensure that if necessary, any required permissions have been obtained for use of reference material in the creation of the artwork (if applicable). Artists who are accustomed to working directly from final photos or from direct observation, should view this project as a chance to take a loosened approach.

I'd encourage members to see this project as an opportunity to get to know a new species, possibly from another part of the world you've never visited, and possibly a species you've never heard of until now. Learn about that species. Fall in love with it. Then paint it (or sculpt it). They ALL need our urgent attention.
