I confess, this time of year is not my favorite. Waking up in darkness, commuting home in darkness, the short days deprive us of light. There’s something about this time of year that can bring out the Scrooge in all of us! It’s no wonder, no matter your religious tradition, this time of year relishes in celebrations of light.
And in those celebrations, I am awe-struck by the role that the arts play in illuminating our lives, taking us out of darkness through music, art, film, dance, and drama. The power of the arts to convey the stories of our various faiths, the stories we share in our households, the songs that we sing, and the traditions we uphold, all have a grounding in who we are and how we convey what we believe.
We encourage you to take time this holiday season to bask in the abundance we have in all the performing and visual arts to lighten your lives. And by the way, a gift of the arts makes a great stocking stuffer! You’ll be giving not only a gift, but an experience!
At this time of year, we wish you a season filled comfort and joy, and a new year filled with peace and prosperity!

Ship of Theseus by
Lauren E. Peters
|
self-portrait (Medusa), 2018, oil on canvas, 28" x 36"
|
|
Ship of Theseus, an exhibition of self-portraits by painter Lauren E. Peters, will be on view in the Mezzanine Gallery from December 7-28, 2018. Peters received a
2018 Individual Artist Fellowship in Painting. The artist will host a free opening reception on Friday, December 7 from 5-8 p.m.
Greek and Roman references and the understanding of self/identity have been recurring themes in Peters’ work. Her choice of the exhibition title,
Ship of Theseus, is a reference to thought experiment that raises the question of whether a ship—standing for an object in general—that has had all of its components replaced remains fundamentally the same object. In her artwork, Peters explores the fluid and multifaceted nature of identity through a series of self-portraits in which she wears a variety of clothing and props. Peters’ colorful personas fill the foreground and they frequently gaze directly at the viewer.
|
|
The Mezzanine Gallery, open weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., is located in the
Carvel State Office Building, 820 N. French Street, Wilmington.

If you love the arts and actively participate in programs or attend events, you may be a candidate to serve as an on-site evaluator for the Division. We are currently seeking to expand our list of potential evaluators who are dependable, articulate observers with knowledge in one or more art forms (you do not need to be professionally trained in the arts).
Evaluators generally attend and produce a written review of two or more programs each year, including performances, exhibits, workshops or classes, and more. Experience new art forms and see more of Delaware’s treasures while serving a vital role in the review of grant-funded programs. If interested, please visit
smARTDE.

To be considered for service, you may nominate yourself or someone else. Nominations are accepted year round; the next panel review meetings take place in early May 2019. Please visit
