Welcome April!
 I hope that your spring season is off to a great start. My family and I spent a very relaxing week together on a "Dude Ranch" this week. We rode horses, went on hikes, went fishing, and in general, took advantage to recharge for the months ahead. We have a lot of issues coming up in our district and the City, which I look forward to collaborating on with you.
The first issue coming up for discussion is on short-term rentals, also referred to as Air BnB or VRBO rentals. Currently, short term rentals are illegal in Long Beach, but as many in the coastal areas can attest to, there is no shortage of them in our City. The issue will be coming to the City Council for the creation of a new short term rental ordinance.
Many people feel very passionately about this topic. Some of our residents favor short term rentals because they are property owners who rent out a portion of their home or their accessory units. This model is called a "house-sharing" model. Others favor the concept because they rent out the entire house and use it as a source of additional income. Some residents are very concerned about the quality of life impacts of short term rentals where the owner of the property is not on site. These rentals concern me as well. Regardless of where you stand on this issue, I want to make sure I hear from you during the outreach process. The city has hired a consultant who has completed a similar process for many other cities. The consultant will be seeking input from stakeholders and community members between April and May. Once they have heard from everyone, they will return to council, some recommendations that could include maintaining the ban, lifting the ban and limiting short term rentals in certain parts of town (such as parking impacted areas or other criteria), and/or allowing short term rentals and requiring them to pay taxes, similar to a hotel. The recommended options are unknown at this time because THEY HAVE YET TO BE FORMULATED.
If you are interested in this issue, please join us for a community meeting on May 2 from 6-8 pm at the Recreation Park Golf Course (5001 Deukmejian Dr.) This is a very important conversation. Please spread the word. I want to hear from everyone, regardless of what side of the issue you are on. Ultimately, there are some council members who will be in favor of allowing short term rental across the whole city and others, like me, who will want to see all options because of the negative quality of life impacts to my residents. I want to hear from you and encourage you to be a part of this conversation. PLEASE spread the word and forward this newsletter to anyone you think would be interested in the conversation.

That is a situation I am watching closely and working behind the scenes with our city staff to make progress on. If you care about that issue, please read the article below on legislative changes and support letters for the same.

GIRLS LEAD CONNECT WORKSHOP - April 15
Councilwoman Suzie Price started the Girls Lead Academy in 2017 with the help of Yesmean Rihbany, resident and facilitator in the 3rd District. As a result, we have been able to empower middle and high school girls with a program that gives an opportunity to those interested in making a difference in their community.
Our next GLA Connect event will be on
Saturday, April 15th at 1 PM. As a result of our last Connect event, the girls overwhelmingly asked for a topic on how to reduce stress and stress management. Since kids deal with many stress factors in their life, we'd like to provide these young adults some tools they can use to combat these stressful triggers or other triggers in their life.

3RD DISTRICT COMMUNITY MEETING - May 2
 After several months of research and planning, the City is now taking the next step toward creating a new ordinance on short-term rental properties, commonly referred to by the major companies that operate this, Airbnb, and VRBO.
There will be a series of citywide meetings held, and we will be having the first of which in the Third District on
May 2 at 6:00 PM at Recreation Park Golf Course (5001 Deukmejian Dr.)
Over the past few months the City has conducted research, hired a consultant to assist in developing a new ordinance, and proposed an outreach plan to solicit input from residents. This is a process that was initiated months ago with the intention of providing broad outreach to residents in order to develop an appropriate policy that addresses the chronic concerns, and issues residents experience as a result of short-term rental properties.

This is certainly a topic that residents feel strongly about on both sides of this discussion, and is something that my office and I have focused on at my regular community meetings, and have met with residents as we work to address various concerns.
New ordinances take time, and benefit from community input, so I encourage you to attend the upcoming meeting and be a part of the process. We want the consultant to hear honestly from all residents regardless of what side of the issue you are on with everyone feeling heard in an inclusive process.

Councilwoman Price along with Councilman Supernaw are partnering to provide a spay and neuter clinic on
April 14, 2018 from 7:30 AM to 3:00 PM at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (1140 Ximeno Avenue).
The Councilwoman is always happy to partner with Councilman Supernaw, and to provide important services to residents. Ensuring our four-legged friends are well cared for and safe is a responsibility all of us pet owners must take on, and helping pet owners by supporting this event can really help.

GIRLSLEAD ACADEMY EVENT ON SEXUAL HARASSMENT - April 21
Sexual harassment has long been an unfortunate part of the climate in middle and high schools in the United States. Often considered a kind of bullying, sexual
harassment by definition involves sex and gender and therefore warrants separate attention. The legal definition of sexual harassment also differentiates it
from bullying. Documented research tells us that at least one in four middle school students say they've experienced unwanted verbal or physical harassment on school grounds, often in the hallway or even in the classroom.
On Saturday, April 21, from 10 am to noon, the GirlsLead Academy will be hosting a Sexual Harassment seminar. It's open to the public, but designed for middle school students and their parents and will include keynote speakers from the YWCA Compton Empowerment Center, Interval House and Safe Kids, Inc. A short, informative video will also be shown that features young students reenacting sexual harassment situations and the solutions and tips to resolve these issues.
The GirlsLead Academy is a pilot program initiated by the 3

District Councilwoman to empower high school girls through organizing and working as a team with the end-goal of executing a project of their choice that would make a difference in the community.

NORWOOZ - (RECAP)
Approximately 300 million people worldwide celebrate Norooz (pronounced no-
rooz),
with traditions and events that may include folk dance performances, special concerts and tree planting ceremonies. This celebration of the Persian New Year promotes peace and solidarity, and also focuses reconciliation and neighborliness, which contributes to cultural diversity and friendship among people in different communities.
On Tuesday, March 20th, Councilwoman Suzie Price in partnership with the Iranian-Persian American Association of Greater Long Beach hosted the 4th Annual
Norooz Celebration at Long Beach City Hall with a beautiful haft-seen table that included objects, pictures and hot tea and treats. The reception began in the City Hall lobby at 4 pm and continued into the council chamber at 5 pm when the City Council proclaimed the Iranian New Year during their meeting.
Councilwoman Price's District Office Director, Nina Moussavi gave a wonderful and refreshing speech that described her Persian roots and memories of this special celebration. She was quick to point out that holidays like these bring together families and communities, and introduce new generations to traditional food, dance, and music.
In the increasingly globalized world, interacting with the beauty of cultural celebrations is a humanizing experience that encourages the appreciation of diversity. A special thank you to Suzie's mom, Minoo Maasomi, and the entire IPAA board that worked so hard on this event.

SPRING INTO SUMMER CONCERT - (RECAP)
Most people know that Councilwoman Suzie Price loves when the community comes together. She also loves concerts that include a fa
ntastic setting, an amazing performance by a great band, and perfect weather. All three of these came together on Sunday, March 25
th
, at the 4
th
Annual Spring into Summer Community Concert. This was a perfect way to kick off the many concerts that will come to Long Beach during the 2018 concert series.
The event was held at Marine Stadium Park. The atmosphere was electric and the turn out exceeded our expectations! We had four food trucks and a kettle corn vendor that helped feed the crowd, while a bounce house, face painter and balloon artist entertained the kids.
As in previous years, Councilwoman Price took this opportunity to introduce and thank the various 3rd District Commissioners for their dedicated service to the community. A special thank you goes out to the Port of Long Beach for their gracious sponsorship that helped pay for the band and stage rental and for helping us provide such wonderful programming free of charge, and to The Dustbowl Revival for their amazing performance that night. ANTI-BULLY EVENT - (RECAP)
Communities and schools are increasingly under pressure to do something about bullying and social media awareness in adolescents. Councilwoman Price in partnership with Shaila Saint, Mollie Bennett and Kyle Becker feel that this is not just a school issue, and giving parents an opportunity to learn what kind of material their child is exposed to is very important.
We wanted to engage parents as well as middle school students to have a conversation about these topics since there has been a dramatic increase in the use of media by children and adolescents in the past few decades. Additionally, the increase of aggressive behavior in children has been correlated to the amount of time children are allowed to spend using the Internet (Fritz, 2012).
On Saturday, March 10th, Councilwoman Price hosted her 4th Annual Anti-Bullying and Social Media Awareness workshop at CSULB. Despite the rain, we had over 150 parents and students attend the event. We watched the award winning movie Screenagers and then separated into parent and student workshops where we were able to learn more about how social media effects family life as well as home life.
It was a great event and the goal of this educational workshop was to inform parents and students about the negative and positive effects social media has on the younger generation developing with social media in their midst. A special thank you to the Port of Long Beach for their generous sponsorship, and Dunkin' Donuts for providing the coffee, cocoa and treats for us.

TSUNAMI WALK - (RECAP)
Thank you to everyone who attended our March Community Meeting and Tsunami Awareness Walk. We had representatives from the Disaster Preparedness Department, CERT Program, Southern California Earthquake Center, Cal OES, and so many more. Neighbors had the opportunity to learn how to put together a tsunami kit, see maps of the tsunami inundation zones in the area, walk some of the best routes to safety, and identify the signs that a tsunami is approaching. Disaster preparedness is extremely important and our office will continue to work to ensure that our community knows how to stay safe in the event of a natural disaster.

6th Street Bike Blvd / PEROW / Bike Registration - (RECAP)
For those of you that read this newsletter regularly (we hope there's a lot of you with how hard we work on it) you'll know that as an office we try to keep up with the excitement and enthusiasm that the Councilwoman brings to community engagement, and celebrating the positive progress being made in the district
 So, we hold a lot of events year round, but Saturday the 24th was a particularly busy day with three fantastic events happening one right after another. There was the Community Bike Ride along 6th Street that included a ribbon cutting for the newly repaved and more safe 6th Street complete with new pavement, traffic circles, curbs, and sidewalks. The ride then took us to the Red Car Greenbelt which was having its official grand opening with food trucks, live music, and tons of smiles, happy kids, and wildflowers. This is a fantastic new park that we are so proud to have had a hand in creating, and the fun that everyone had at the event really shows it will be a great part of the community. We then held the first of many bike registration events we will be holding.
 After last month the City Council passing a new free and voluntary bike registration program we wanted to immediately hit the ground running and start ensuring lost bikes get returned to their owners. And the turn out was amazing! We had over seventy-five people come get their bikes registered, and enjoy food trucks, free kids bike helmets and safety training for kids by the police department, and the library's mobile 3D Printing Lab. If you missed it, we will be holding more bike registration events throughout the district, so keep an eye out for us

MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY (MADD) - (RECAP)
The fourth annual Belmont Heights Make a Difference Day (BHMADD), was held on Sunday, March 18, 2018.
Temple Israel, Belmont Heights United Methodist Church, Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, Belmont Heights Community Association, Suzie Price's Third District Council Office, and Long Beach Islamic Center, co-sponsored BHMADD 2018.
The event, originally inspired by Tempe Israel's Mitzvah Day ("a good deed day"), began on Sunday morning at Temple Israel with over 300 registered volunteers. Participants completed 18 projects within the Belmont Heights and surrounding neighborhoods.
Below is a list of projects completed on that day:
· Welcome to Your New Home baskets - 15 completed for low-income families
· Feed the Hungry - 800 PB&J sandwiches made for the homeless
· Thank You Firefighters - 400 cookies made
· Breathe with the Trees - 11 trees planted in the Alamitos Heights Community
· Stay in School - 186 backpack supplies gathered for School on Wheels
· Flash Food Drive - 60 bags of groceries collected at designated markets and delivered to the CSULB Beach Student Pantry and Emmanuel Food Bank
· Help Us Help Them - construction of an accessible building ramp
· Calling All Vampires - 28 blood donors
· Rainbow Renewal, Save the Beautiful Heron, and Lagoon Monster - restoration and clean-up of our parkways and environment
 Rabbi Moskovitz, from Temple Israel, has often reminded the BHMADD team that a key goal for the event is to build community partnership that will be sustainable and strong when outreach and support is needed. Connecting our diverse community with a common "call to service" fosters a collaborative spirit that is so often needed in divisive times.
We hope to see you next year when Belmont Heights Make a Difference Day continues this tradition!

UPDATE ON COMMUNITY HOSPITAL
 Tuesday the City Council received an update from staff in the form of a public study session on Community Hospital. At this point most people are aware of the basic issues at hand, which is that the hospital is on an active seismic fault line, and has not been properly retrofitted to abide by state standards. Memorial Care is the hospital operator and have been for several years ad were aware of the seismic issues when they took over operations at Community. However, the recent issues began
when unprompted, they requested the state to weigh in
on their level of compliance with state seismic requirements. The state said they were currently not seismically safe, so Memorial Care said they would be closing Community Hospital in 2019. Since then they have rapidly accelerated the process by saying they would instead leave in 120 days, then suspended acute care services at the facility deferring ambulances to other hospitals, and most recently issued layoff notices to 40 employees.
With these factors in mind, and the need for emergency room care in east Long Beach, the city has been working with prospective operators in order to take over control of the property when Memorial Care leaves. The city is also worked with our Assemblymember Patrick O'Donnell to draft legislation that would extend the compliance period for the future operator giving them extra time to retrofit the facility. Additionally, the city is working to make sure licenses are maintained so that the future operator can take on the necessary operations.
City staff expects to be able to come back to City Council with a number of viable options for how to address the current situation with the goal of maintaining essential medical services at this facility. Obviously this has been a very fluid situation, so we will keep residents informed of any updates.
A bill hearing for AB 2591 - (O'Donnell), the Community Hospital legislation has been set for April 17. The City's letter of support has already been submitted for the bill, and Assemblymember O'Donnell's Office is gathering letters of support as well.

City Council Meetings are held every Tuesday evening, with the exception of the last Tuesday of the month when council is "dark." Meetings are held in City Hall - Council Chambers (333 W. Ocean Blvd.) at approximately 5pm. Times do change, so please check with our office or website for exact times. City Council meetings are open to the public and we encourage your attendance, especially if there is an important topic up for discussion.

There are numerous community based commissions that play a vital role in the City of Long Beach. The Mayor's Office accepts applications all year long, and applications are kept on file for 2 years. Presently, we are seeking applications to fill a vacancy in the Belmont Shore Parking and Business Improvement Area Advisory Commission.
The BSPBIA is an advisory commission that recommends to the Mayor and City Council, solutions to parking problems in Belmont Shore and ideas on how to utilize the funds obtained from the parking meter revenue in Belmont Shore. You can access the application here:

JOHN PARKINS PARK
In 2015 the Bluff Park neighborhood lost a fantastic resident. Many neighbors were saddened to lose a community member like him. He was a resident of Bluff Park for 33 years and was a strong supporter and former board member of the local community association, the Bluff Park Neighborhood Association. Although John is well known throughout the city for his role in addressing subsidence and the use of Long Beach oil revenues, it is his impact on his local neighborhood that many residents remember most fondly. In honor of this resident and the positive mark he left on his community, Councilwoman Price, with the support of Bluff Park residents, is proposing the pocket park at 1
st
Street and Loma Avenue be named in his honor. This naming will be on the April 17
th
City Council agenda.

Second Annual Hospitality Job Fair

We are excited to be partnering with 4 job agencies (LBCC, CSULB, LB Call and Pacific Gateway) who are coordinating the event and soliciting hospitality candidates/job seekers from the long beach area.
Last year we had roughly 250 qualified job seekers and more than 20 businesses in attendance, and we expect more this year!

The track encompasses Shoreline Drive and Seaside Way with entrances at the Pike Outlet on Aquarium way, Shoreline Drive just south of Ocean Blvd, Seaside Way and Pine Ave, and the Convention Center at Long Beach Blvd and Ocean Blvd; Ocean Blvd will be open to traffic at all times, Shoreline Drive and Seaside Way will be closed for the duration of the event.

Renown choreographer Aaron Cash stars in his ode to dance and those who
have given themselves to creating the message and wonders
LONG BEACH, CA --
As a somewhat shy and chubby 4thgrader dancing in his first performance, Australian born Aaron Cash was struck by the dance muse
Terpsichore, and she has not let him loose. He has been dancing, choreographing and teaching since that day.
The premier of his one-man show, Last
Dance, on Sunday, April 8 at the Long Beach Playhouse at 3:00 p.m. and Sunday April 15 at 7:00 p.m., brings the dance spirit that has guided Aaron's career and life to the stage. Last Dance "features three very different men, and dancers -- Gunter Von Pantzappfel, Rafeal Bonnicella Garcia Arranjuez, and Peter Brown aka Con Temporary -- all from different eras. It highlights their struggles, triumphs, loves and despair, as they recount their lives, perform their styles that took the dance world by storm (or not) and seek to memorialize their contributions to dance. Their journeys are, at turns, hilarious, heartbreaking and life lessons.
Aaron's 40-plus years on the boards and in the air, have provided him with the unique worldwide experience to bring the Last Dance'strio of choreographers to the stage.
"Dance has always been my surest and most direct form of communication," Aaron said, "with Last Dance, I have the chance to express my thanks, joy, love and sheer delight in what dance has brought to me. And to try and share it with the help of the three dancers in Last Dance. Each time I perform Last Dance, I learn something new from these men about myself, dance, and, always, what it means to offer yourself up to something or someone."
Originally from Brisbane, Aaron is a multi-talented performer and one of the original members of Tap Dogs. At 19, he was cast by the legendary choreographer Kenny Ortega for Cher's Love Hurts Tour. This led to Aaron's 10-year role as Cher's lead dancer (she referred to Aaron as Thor). Aaron's worked with Paula Abdul (So You Think You Can Dance Australia), Michael Jackson, Prince, the Chairman of the Board, Frank Sinatra, and many others.
In 1992, Twyla Tharp hand-picked Aaron to become her pas de deux (dance for two) partner, and Mikhail Baryshnikov added Aaron to the Tharp, Baryshnikov and Dancers World Tour. In 2010, He co-choreographed the internationally acclaimed Cuban hit show Ballet Revolucion. Two of his pieces were performed before Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at the 60thJubilee Royal Variety Performance in 2012. Ballet Revolucioncontinues to tour, with Aaron's co-direction, throughout the world.

"Run the Course" at the Inaugural Grand Prix 5K Run/Walk
"Early bird" entry fee is $30 per person until March 14 then fee goes up to $35
Medals, t-shirt and Friday admission ticket to the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beacgh
Participants will have the unique opportunity to "run the course" on the Grand Prix race circuit. This is the first time course has been open to a running event in more than 35 years.
5K course will start at the official Grand Prix start/finish line on Shoreline Drive, head up Pine Ave and Seaside way and retrun to Shoreline Drive on a two-lap tour of the circuit.
Monies raised from the Grand Prix 5K, organized in conjunction with Run Racing, will go to the Grand Prix Foundation's charitable endeavors, which include funding for Long Beach area charities that include the Long Beach Special Olympics, Ronald McDonald House, Century Club, Operation Jump Start and many others. The Foundation also stages a Monte Carlo Night on Friday, April 13
