International Day of Living in Peace Together

May 16, 2019, was the climax of our International Week celebrations! K and 1st graders sang two songs, preschoolers paraded around the school, and then they visited middle school classrooms. They travelled to Canada and experienced a traditional folk dance, to Guatemala where they exercised their memory skills, to India where they enjoyed a dance performance from 6th grade girls and tasted food, to Norway where they admired wonderful landscapes, and Haiti where they learned about the country and played games. Thank you to all involved, hosts and guests, and all teachers!

Art Fair

The art fair was a huge success with over 60 entires from all ages. The theme "recycling" inspired some very creative artists to explore their ideas on the topic in impactful and thought provoking ways with the audience. Each participating artist received a certificate of participation, as we congratulate all of our aspiring artists!  Bravo!  We look forward to the art fair next year and the art that our talented students will create!

As you may recall, our recent CAIS accreditation recommended implementing a school-wide Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) program, highlighting our need to 1) deepen and harmonize the SEL work already being done at all levels of the school, and 2) choose a school-wide program adaptable to our PreK - 8 bilingual environment with shared language, values, rituals, routines, processes, techniques and approaches to incorporate in the classroom and in the community. To that end, a SEL Task Force was formed this year to reflect on what we are doing already, what is working, and what could be improved. The task force also conducted research on top SEL programs and gathered feedback from peer schools. Our goal was to choose a school-wide program that would not be an add-on curriculum but rather integrated into teaching and learning.

After careful consideration we have chosen Responsive Classroom, an evidence-based program that focuses on the strong relationship between academic success and Social-Emotional Learning. The Responsive Classroom approach empowers educators to create safe, joyful, and engaging learning communities where all students have a sense of belonging and feel significant. (https://www.responsiveclassroom.org/about/).

We will be offering two information sessions for families interested in learning more about Responsive Classroom, both on Monday, June 3: one from 8:50 - 9:20 a.m. and one from 5:30 - 6:00 p.m. in Room C-14. We hope that by offering a morning and an evening option, most schedules will be accommodated. More sessions for interested parents will be offered in the new school year.

Mark Rosenblum, Head of school and Erin Stoller, SEL Coordinator

Chers parents,

Parents' Day

Video: PK1 with Valérie.

Our PK0 to PK2 celebrated SDFAS parents on Friday May 10th. All of our students prepared delicious snacks for their parents and had some surprises for them. They proudly performed for their special guests by singing or saying a poem.
Thank you all for your support and dedication all year long for all of our SDFAS programs. One day is not enough to express our gratitude!

Hiking and a solar oven for camping

The PK2 students have been learning about camping and hiking this Spring. Each classroom has a tent and camping supplies. We went on a field trip to Rancho Penasquitos where we went hiking and had a picnic. The student hiked 2.5 miles, we had to navigate multiple trails and cross a river twice using a bridge and stones. Some students even got to feed a horse that we met along the way. They learned about reading trail maps and trail etiquette (making space for horseback riders and other trail users). We studied the local insects, plants and wildlife and kept records of what we observed. After our hike we had a picnic at the Los Penasquitos Ranch House. The students did a great job hiking and we had a wonderful day outside. Thank you to our amazing parent chaperones for coming on this adventure with us!!

A solar oven for camping:

When we started our unit on camping, the students identified that cooking marshmallows in the fire was a key composent of camping,
As we, obviously, could not use a regular campfire we, therefore, worked on building a solar oven to cook our marshmallows !
We have had some serious issues with the weather recently, as clouds and rain did not provide optimal conditions needed for our solar oven.
We discussed that we would need some sun at noon, just before Lunch, and it would take all afternoon to cook with our oven.
Finally, after a week of waiting, right after Lunch time, the sun came out. So we decided to give it a chance and try to cook our S'Mores.
We prepared them carefully. Then we put it outside right in the sun..... and we waited until right before pick up time... to discover that the chocolate had melted and the S'mores were almost ready to eat !!!
One more layer of cracker... YUMMY !!!
It was a great success and a fun experience of discovering that in certain conditions the sun can warm up things and melt some chocolate.

Field trip to Rawhide Ranch

Pictured: Sylvia Aka & Cathleen Anderson.

Each year the 4th Grade students attend an eventful, 3-day and 2-night field trip to Rawhide Ranch located in Bonsall. They gain confidence and independence while learning new skills and information during activities and work collaboratively to take care of the animals present at the Ranch. They always leave with fun and lasting memories of their horse, friendships, and accomplishments.

A note from 2nd grade:  "Dear Anne-Emilie and Taylor,

Thank you for coming to school and bringing us these pretty plants that smell good. Thank you for teaching us how to plant a plant. Everyday, we smell the plants when we leave the classroom and that makes us happy. One of our favorite plants is lemon thyme (and also lavender).
We set up a new job: water the plants once a day.
