Greetings Parents and Families of Harding Middle School,
Message from our Principal
March is here and we are full speed ahead in testing mode. This year the state tests will start Monday, March 25(ELA) and will take us through Friday, May 10(Math, Science & SS). As a parent, it is important to talk with your kids about staying focused on the test without over stressing. Your child prepares every day for these assessments. When the day comes, it should be nothing different than they already are doing in the classroom. Testing tips that can help are getting plenty of sleep the night before and eating a well-balanced breakfast. Free breakfast is available daily to all Harding students.Teachers and students have worked very hard preparing for the upcoming assessments, and we are proud of each of these efforts. Don't forget, track season starts on Monday and it’s very important for these student athletes to stay focused in the classroom in order to remain eligible. We can't wait to see what our fantastic athletes have in store for us this spring! Also, we want to wish the best of luck to those students participating in the Regional Power of the Pen, Regional Spelling Bee and District Science Fair.

Please join our squad in helping to raise money for our local heroes and others! Harding Middle School will be collecting loose change as well as sponsoring a spirit week for $1 each day that your student would like to participate. The homeroom that raises the most money at the end of the week will win a pizza party! All proceeds benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. **More information will be sent home in a few weeks**

Online Report Cards--Available March 26th
Parents of Steubenville City Schools students will need to go online (Progress Book) to find their child's interim, quarterly and semester grades.
SCS will be sending out a call notification to parents and guardians to remind them to check Progress Book at the end of each grading period.
Parents without access to the internet are free to go to the office to request the hard copy, and we would be happy to print one for you. We appreciate your continued support and cooperation.

HARDING STALLION WINTER SPORTS RECAP
2018-2019

Harding Boys JV Basketball
The Harding Reserve boys’ basketball team finished the year with a record of 5-6. At the beginning of the season, the boys and Coach Price talked about the purpose of this team and what’s expected of all who are on it. Their one major topic of discussion was “Accountability”!
Every student-athlete who played for this 2018-19 JV team made every single practice, gave their best effort day in and day out, and most importantly excelled above and beyond in the classroom. The team’s second major topic, or goal, was to improve. The team understood that it’s not how you start, but instead it’s how you finish. Each member of this year’s team improved both academically and athletically from beginning to end.
The team won their final game at home vs. Jefferson Christian in thrilling fashion with a 16-15 victory. The Most Improved Player of the Season goes to 8

grader Dorian Thorn.
Harding Girls Basketball
The 7
th
grade girls’ team finished the 2018-2019 season with a record of 5-13. The team struggled early but picked it up a bit over Christmas Break by defeating St. Clairsville in an overtime barn-burner 34-33. The Lady Stallions also defeated Moundsville Middle in come from behind fashion with a 22-21 victory. The 7
th
grade girls faced many tough opponents this season along with a lot of adversity, but never once gave up. The highlight of the season was an opening round win in the Bellaire Tournament against a tough Union Local team by the score of 37-24. In the victory, Madalyn Criss led all scorers with 19 points, Aniyah Warner added 11, and Sabria Jones chipped in with 7 points. The 7
th
grade Lady Stallions ended their season with a loss in the tournament to host Bellaire by a score of 32-18. The coaches would like to wish the girls good luck in the Spring and they hope to see them all out again next season.
The Harding 8
th
grade girls’ team finished the 2018-2019 season with a record of 3-16. The girls worked extremely hard the entire season and never gave up. After losing to a very good Bellaire team, at Bellaire, by the score of 35-5 earlier in the season, the 8
th
grade Lady Stallions fought back in the rematch by beating Bellaire weeks later by the score of 21-17. In the victory, Sydney Matyas scored 8 points, Gianna Boley had 6, Katie Valentine 4, Corina Mayo 2, and Milana Bressler finished with 1. Coach Petrelle and Coach Barletta want to thank the 8

grade girls for their hard work and effort this season and would like to wish them the best of luck next season at Steubenville High School.
Harding Boys Basketball
The 7
th
grade boys’ basketball team finished the season with a record of 17-1. The regular season was highlighted with wins over undefeated Triadelphia as well as defeating an 8
th
grade Bridgestreet Middle School team in the Wheeling Holiday Classic. The team received the #1 seed in the Al Glitch St. Clairsville Middle School Tournament, where it faced a solid St. Clairsville team in the semi-finals. The Stallions pulled out an overtime victory and moved on to the championship game to face the Linsly Cadets. The final game was never close as the Stallions led from the opening tip and finished with a 16-point victory
.
The 8
th
grade boys’ basketball team finished the season with a record of 14-4. The regular season was highlighted with a 1 point, last second victory over Bellaire and a strong 26 point victory against Wheeling Middle School in the Wheeling Holiday Classic. After receiving the #2 seed in the Al Glitch St. Clairsville Middle School Tournament, the Stallions faced the Linsly Cadets in the semi-finals. After a tough fought first half that concluded with the Stallions up by 3 points, the second half went the way of the Cadets and saw the Stallions fall in the end. The Stallions were able to bounce back two days later and defeat St. Clairsville in the consolation game and finish the tournament with a third place trophy.
Harding Wrestling
The Harding wrestling team had another successful season this year by placing 1st at the Martins Ferry and Buckeye Local wrestling tournaments, as well as 2nd place finishes at Oak Glen and The Ohio Valley Junior High Championships. Harding also had a 6th place finish out of 40 teams at the Cambridge Open, which is home to one of the toughest junior high wrestling tournaments in the state of Ohio. Multiple wrestlers placed at all the tournaments throughout the year with 8th grader Ethan Waggoner leading the way. Ethan finished with an undefeated record and placed 1st at every tournament to go along with a Most Outstanding Wrestler award at the “Best of the Midwest” tournament in Philo, Ohio. Other 8th grade wrestlers finding success this season were Jordan West, Kaiden Minella, Hakim Edwards, Kingston Reynolds, Tylik Sims, Cooper Blackburn, DaShon Seditz, Bryce Benton, Spenser Ostovich, and Bryce Huff. Three wrestlers were also able to qualify for the Junior High State Wrestling Championships in Youngstown on March 16th-17th. Ethan Waggoner (1st), Cal Beadling (1st), & Spenser Ostovich (2nd) will all have a chance to compete for an individual state title. At the end of the season, the Harding wrestling team was chosen to compete in the Ohio Junior High State Dual Championships at Thomas Worthington High School in Columbus. The top 8 teams in Division II (based on their High School affiliations) competed for a chance to win a team state championship for their school and Harding finished in 3rd place. The team went 3-1 in the duals with wins over Bexley, Poland, & Medina Buckeye. For records, stats, and other information, please visit the Harding athletics wrestling page on rollred.org.

Flu season is here!
Please teach your children to wash their hands well and often! Please keep your child home if he/she has a fever, cough, sore throat, vomiting, and /or diarrhea because it is probably the flu. Being seen quickly for a diagnosis will make the anti-virals work better. Flu usually needs 5 days of recovery time at a minimum to keep from spreading it to others. The student must be 24 hours fever free without medication before they should return to school.
Please check with your doctor with every well visit to see if your child is up to date on their immunizations. Remember
7
th
graders will need a meningococcal vaccine and a Tdap vaccine by August for fall classes.
Please send in paperwork proving vaccination promptly.

TARDIES
:
You will never be successful in school if you are not present at all times. Attendance is crucial to academic and personal/social success. Being on time is a very important character trait that should be developed during this time in your student's life. The "tardy bell" rings at 8:00am EVERY DAY! We will be starting again to implement lunch detentions as outlined in the student handbook.
After six tardies, your student will have to serve a lunch detention for each subsequent tardy.
PLEASE get your kids to school on time each day!
