Luna the cat
Meet a Street Cat Named Luna
The SPCA of Northern Virginia helps rehabilitate and find loving homes for many animals in need of medical care. One of our most recent cases was Luna the Cat, who is on her way to recovery after undergoing surgery for a severely injured leg, and will soon be up for adoption.

Causing an Effect: Chipotle Diners Raise Funds for SPCA NOVA

We had a new fundraising opportunity this year through the Chipotle "Cause an Effect" fundraising campaigns. When Carlos Sarmiento, SPCA supporter and manager of a Chipotle franchise, contacted us to offer his Chipotle location as a sponsor for the campaign, we couldn't turn it down. All we had to do was get supporters to buy dinner at the Merrifield location of Chipotle on October 17th between 5:00-8:00 p.m., and 50 percent of the proceeds would go to the SPCA!

Though the evening was slow to start, there was a rush towards the end of the evening that really brought the fundraising to a peak. It was great standing in line and seeing people holding our flyers and supporting the cause. All told, we raised more than $900 that evening - that's a lot of burritos!

After the event, the manager suggested that we might be able to do this again, at one of the other area locations. Keep an eye on our website and Facebook page for another chance to Cause an Effect!

Tip of the Month:
Keeping Pets Safe During the Holidays

poinsettiaThanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa are joyous and festive events filled with wonderful food and decorations, but remember to keep your pets' safety in mind when you are getting ready to celebrate. Many decorative plants can be toxic to animals, so be careful if you are planning on using any of the following:

  • Poinsettias
  • Mistletoe
  • Holly
  • Daffodils
  • Lilies
  • Christmas trees - both the branches themselves, as well as ornaments, light strings, and tinsel

Pet Project: Include Your Pets in Your Disaster Contingency Planning
Rescue and relief teams are combing the streets of the Philippines looking to help the tens of thousands of animals affected by Typhoon Haiyan. Illinois rescuers are trying to reunite people with their pets in the wake of this week's devastating tornadoes.

Closer to home, this October marked the one-year anniversary of Superstorm Sandy's landfall on the eastern U.S. seaboard, killing over 250 people and uprooting thousands of people and pets. And as we head into the cold winter months, the possibility of debilitating snowstorms and power outages loom over Northern Virginia.

While it is always a good idea to review (or create) disaster plans for your household, it is critically important that your disaster plans include contingencies for providing for your pets. SPCA of Northern Virginia has put together some things you can do to make sure your four-legged companions are protected when disaster strikes.

Adoption Spotlight
Sabre the dog

SABRE is one of our Yemeni street dogs. He's a guy who needs his own space, not in a condo or an apartment or even a townhouse. He needs an adult family in a single family house that has a yard, and if someone is at home during the day it would be a bonus. He's good with older kids and other dogs.

Tally the cat

TALLY is an incredibly loving and affectionate cat. She likes being petted and brushed and has a soft and fluffy gorgeous coat of orange, brown, black, and white fur. Tally likes to follow you around the house, sit in your lap and sleep by your side at night. This sweet girl acts more like a dog than a cat!
