Dear St. Andrews Community,
It has been a pleasure and honor to become the Vice-President of Institutional Advancement for St. Andrews. I am grateful for all the hospitality, greetings, and well-wishes, as we begin together what I hope is a new era for SAU amid a very trying time in our nation’s history. Development officers across the country in every size, shape, and kind of non-profit are having to adjust to stewarding a culture of philanthropy for their respective organizations with great limitations. Since June 8th, my first day on the job, the challenges have been many, but I have the confidence we will overcome the new reality of how we meet, participate, organize, connect, and give to SAU.
Throughout my 37-year career in development and fundraising, the stewardship of volunteers and donors has become paramount in my philosophy of professional practice. I firmly believe there are two kinds of relationships - transactional relationships and transformational relationships. It is said one is out of necessity and the other is out of desire. One has a clear demand and request with an expectation of return, and the other is open-ended with no expectation other than to give. This is certainly true in my field of responsibility with SAU.
Transactional relationships are by nature optimized around getting the most you possibly can in exchange for as little as possible on your part. They tend to be about you and what you can get and not about what you can give. While some of these transactional relationships are necessary, the relationships with our alums, volunteers, and supporters, even if the core objective is transactional, can and should be more transformational in my opinion. This is my ultimate goal and a theme throughout all the new processes in advancement under my direction.
Some of you may have already witnessed part of this change in how we approach advancement. The personal thank you telephone calls, the wonderful e-newsletter going out weekly, surveys, other opportunities for feedback and honest opinions of stockholders, the Zoom meetings, small gifts of appreciation, and the like are all examples. While limited to mostly electronic messaging, more and different ways for us to reach SAU stakeholders are in the planning process. All of this I pray will create a culture for transformational relationships and interactions between the university and our investors. If I have learned anything during my short time here, it is the deep passion and care so many alumni share for what the school has given them and how badly they want SAU to be the best that it can be. It will take time and will be a process, but I have faith that together we will arrive at the place we all seek.
If it had not been for COVID, being from the south I would have scheduled by this time many face to face and smaller group gatherings to get to know you all that much better. I believe in bringing people together for a good purpose but also for uniting the team and school spirit, breaking bread, and building camaraderie.

WHAT DOES AN OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY ASSISTANT DO ON A DAILY BASIS?
|
Many of us take for granted the movements that our body naturally does throughout the day. We often don’t think twice about getting up out of bed, getting dressed, or walking to the kitchen. It isn’t until we have an injury, surgery, or aches and pains that we notice how much we use our fingers, hands, or joints and limbs for daily function. Occupational therapy is a vital resource for patients, both young and old, who need help teaching their bodies how to perform meaningful, daily tasks, and routines. So, what does an occupational therapy...
