Dear SCMS Members,
Happy holidays! I hope all is going smoothly as you finish your academic terms and move just a bit closer to winter break.
The 2019 Seattle Conference schedule is now posted at cmstudies.org. As a reminder, the draft is a work-in-progress, so it does not contain room numbers, but the schedule itself is locked. Please note that the Home Office must receive your requests for corrections to your information by
January 15. In order to help you determine your travel dates, we are also including in this month's issue a 2019 conference event-at-a-glance schedule featuring several compelling events tied to our conference location.
I have just returned from Seattle where I met with faculty and staff of several Seattle-area institutions and organizations to explore avenues for collaboration to make your 2019 conference experience as rich as possible. I am both excited and encouraged by the possibilities.
As anyone who has visited Seattle knows, it has a thriving arts culture that infuses all of its neighborhoods. The Host Committee and I are working to provide you access to amazing venues with film and media relevance such as the historic and architecturally stunning Paramount and 5th Avenue Theatres, both located close to the Sheraton Seattle. Can't-miss museums include MoPOP, the Living Computer Museum, the Seattle Art Museum, and The Nordic Museum. A couple of offbeat sites lending a lot of local flavor are Seattle's old underground, a series of connecting passageways under downtown that were once the city's ground level, or a 30-minute drive to the town of North Bend for a Twin Peaks tour. To help you plan your week in Seattle, we will be providing you with more information on options as we get closer to the conference.
The dates are now locked for the Seventh Annual 2019 SCMS-U Conference. It will be held at
Muhlenberg College in Allentown, PA April 11-13. A Call for Proposals is included in this issue of News Brief. A big thank you goes out to Amy Corbin and Elizabeth Nathanson for making this happen in 2019.
As 2018 winds down, I would like to take a moment to thank all of you who give generously of your time, energy, and intellect through service to SCMS. The SCMS Board, Staff, and I recognize the hard work required in serving on the program and awards committees, our many standing committees, and our Caucus and SIG Coordinating Committees. A heartfelt thank you to each of you for your contributions that make SCMS all that it is. We appreciate you and recognize we could not do it without you.
In closing, I ask each of you to consider making a year-end donation to SCMS. Your support goes a long way towards recognizing the work of your peers through SCMS awards, in providing assistance to those who need it to attend the annual conference, and in helping the Society extend the reach and scope of its work. Travel Grants and Registration Fee Waivers
|
Reminder: The SCMS Board of Directors annually offers travel grants and registration fee waivers to encourage graduate students and underemployed/adjunct faculty who are on the annual conference program to attend.
In 2018, SCMS received 256 applications for available Travel Grants. These awards are selected by lottery. We strongly encourage more applicants across each category of award and encourage the membership at-large to continue to support the Travel Award Fund so as to provide as many grants as possible for this year's and future conferences.

Seventh Annual: Society for Cinema and Media Studies
Undergraduate Conference
Hosted by Muhlenberg College, April 11-13, 2019
The seventh annual SCMS Undergraduate Conference invites undergraduate students from Film Studies, Media Studies or related disciplines to propose papers representing their best work in cinema and media studies. At the conference, students will deliver papers on any aspect of cinema and media history, criticism or theory. We also welcome scholarly submissions in formats other than traditional papers, such as audio visual essays. Each participant will have 15 minutes to present their work--approximately 2,000 words presented at a normal talking speed with a few visual aids.
Any student who wishes to participate in the conference should submit a completed proposal form which will include a 200-word abstract--not complete papers. The submission form can be downloaded
here. A panel composed of Muhlenberg College faculty will select 30 proposals for acceptance to conference and then will organize those proposals into thematically-linked panels. Selected conference participants must agree to attend all three days of the event: an opening reception on Thursday evening (4/11) and two full days of panels on Friday (4/12) and Saturday (4/13).
Registration for the conference is free but students are responsible for organizing their own transportation and accommodations. The conference organizers will provide recommendations for local accommodations and transportation options. Students are encouraged to seek travel funding from their home institutions to defray the costs of travel and lodging. The conference organizers will provide lunch on Friday and Saturday, dinner on Friday and refreshments.

Entering our 60th year, the Society for Cinema & Media Studies serves to promote all areas of cinema and media studies within universities and two-and four-year colleges; to encourage and reward excellence in scholarship and writing; to facilitate and improve the teaching of cinema and media studies as disciplines; to advance multi-cultural awareness and interaction; to serve its members' professional needs and concerns; to strengthen the ties between the academic community and those who interact with it, from the media industries to the government to the public at large; and to promote the preservation of our film, television, and media heritage. The annual SCMS Conference Exhibit Area is an integral part of spreading the word to our members of the size and scope of the academic publishing industry as well as other publishers, institutions and companies which serve the cinema and media studies community available in the US and around the world.
The Exhibit Hall is a major attraction for attendees. In addition to our exhibit area, your organization also has an opportunity to sponsor items and special events and to purchase advertising in the conference program. The opportunities to put your organization in front of a membership of over 3,000 professionals from 38 nations are varied and many.
In a survey of 2018 SCMS annual meeting attendees, over 90% stated that they visited the exhibit hall.

The American Council of Learned Societies is now accepting applications for the ACLS Digital Extension Grant Program, which is made possible by the generous support of The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
The program aims to extend the opportunity to participate in the digital transformation of humanistic inquiry to a greater number of scholars by supporting digitally based research projects in all disciplines of the humanities and related social sciences.
Applications must be submitted through our online fellowship and grant administration system (ofa.acls.org) by January 16, 2019, 9 PM EST. More information about the program, including eligibility guidelines and the application process, is available at www.acls.org/programs/digitalextension/.

Postdoctoral Partnership Initiative

The American Council of Learned Societies is
pleased to offer a new round of funding to support partnerships with US colleges and universities committed to increasing the diversity of their faculty. We invite proposals to support postdoctoral fellowships within fields of the humanities for members of groups that have been historically underrepresented on their campuses, with the ultimate goal of transforming these positions into tenure-track hires.

In March 2019, at the Society for Cinema and Media Studies conference, a group of scholars and educators will gather to discuss and develop innovative approaches to inclusive teaching in media studies across classrooms and curricula. As we strive to be inclusive and collaborative in our research, your voice is essential to contributing to a broader understanding of the state of equity and inclusion in our media studies classrooms.
Data from this survey will be used by media studies scholars to support media studies faculty and departments. This research builds on research and best practices established by the initiative EDIT Media (Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Teaching Media), a nationally recognized consortium of media production and studies faculty dedicated to improving and advancing inclusive pedagogical practices.
This year, we are working to create a set of Best Practices in Inclusive Teaching specifically for media studies, broadly defined as those disciplines associated with screens including film, television, web series, video games, Internet and social media, mobile media, virtual and augmented reality, etc.
