The 2018 Biomedical Engineering Society Annual Meeting in Atlanta kicked off Wednesday, drawing more than 5,200 attendees - the most ever to attend a BMES meeting.
More than 2,000 people gathered in the Georgia World Congress Center for the meeting's welcome reception.
The four-day meeting will feature more than 2,900 scientific research presentations: more than 900 oral presentations and more than 2,000 posters.
Today's 10:15 am plenary session will include President Lori Setton's state of the society address, the Robert A. Pritzker Distinguished Award presentation honoring Rashid Bashir.
The 5:30 pm plenary session will feature Anjelica Gonzalez who will present the Diversity Award Lecture.
Current and past leaders gather to celebrate BMES 50th Anniversary
Past BMES presidents, journal editors and other society leaders were honored at an event Wednesday night.
BMES President Lori Setton and incoming President Dawn Elliott honored several people and organizations including the Whitaker Foundation, the Wallace H. Coulter foundation, Clemson University and more.
Former presidents reenacted a 1993 photo of BMES presidents around a celebratory cake.
LGBT and Friends Dessert Social
Dr. Jennifer Olson Hasler gave an informal talk at this year's LGBT & Friends dessert social, where she recounted her transition that took place about 12 years ago.
Hasler fielded questions from attendees and encourgage a free ranging conversation on a broad range of issues.
This is the fourth year of the event that continues to grow more popular with each year.
Meet the Faculty Candidates poster session draws hundreds
Nearly a hundred candidates and dozens of employers attended the Meet-the-Faculty Candidate poster session Wednesday.
The forum provides an opportunity for faculty, recruiters, and Department Chairs to speak directly with current graduate students and postdoctoral researchers who are seeking faculty positions.
