NEWSLETTER APRIL 2018
Doug Burke

ACE Tennis President
Let me begin by mentioning how proud we are of Mike Hall, our ACE Burlington High Performance Director - for winning the 2017 National Coaching Excellence Award. Well Deserved Mike!!

Our competitive players are in the height of the indoor competitive season, having performed excellent in the various age groups at the Provincial Indoor Championships (highlighted by stellar performances by Viktoriya Tabunshchyk & Vicky Mboko - winning the Girls U18 & U14 titles respectively; while Rita Colyer & Nemanja Stefanovic were U18 & U14 finalists), and with our players that qualified for Nationals currently battling in the National Events. Indeed we are proud of ALL our players that have qualified for the Provincial and National events, and continue to fight hard to represent themselves and Ace as best as they can.
Some of our younger competitive players were also very busy, competing in the recent OTA U10 Championships and the OTA U9 TDC Cup (see below) where they experienced the various elements of team and individual competition. Additionally, many of our U10 competitive players participated in our March Break Camps held at Cedar Springs Club and Toronto Tennis City.

Our exciting annual Spring ITF International tournament starts this weekend, followed by the U10/12 & 14 Team events (which see teams from across Canada participating) in May.

Meanwhile our progressive classes for the upcoming Spring session in both Burlington and Toronto at Toronto Tennis City are filling up - the Spring session starts the week of April 30th - so register quickly to ensure a spot. Our summer camps at both locations are also open for registration - try and reserve a place early before the rush settles in.

Happy Spring!!
Doug Burke

MARCH BREAK CAMPS
2018
ACE Toronto at Toronto Tennis City offered recreational and competitive training oppor- tunities for all ages and levels on red clay courts. Recreational players had the opportunity to join half day or full day progressive camps. Competitive players benefitted from our high performance environment which included fitness and an emphasis on preparing players for tournament play. ACE Toronto coaches Morgan Lever, John Cairns and Benjamin Cayuela.
ACE Burlington ran the U9-U11 High Performance camp. As usual the fitness level was intense and players could also regenerate in the pool at Cedar Springs as the camp included an hour of swimming. Pictured on the left is Deniz Karabulut with coach Walker Lamarche.

VIKTORYIA TABUNSHCHYK- U18 PROVINCIAL CHAMPION
- AN ONGOING SUCCESS STORY
At ACE we have been fortunate to meet so many kids who fulfill the Ace motto of "Discipline, Pride and Courage" -  Vita Tabunshchyk, who recently won the OTA U18 Provincials is one of those players. We have seen her growing up from a 9 year old who could do 1000 sit ups, who won national championships, who represented Canada in international competition, but who knew that education was the answer to her future. Vita has been accepted on a tennis scholarship to the reputable private research university MIT starting this fall.

PLAYERS JOINING THE ACE FAMILY

Maya Arksey U16 Provincial Circuit Champion with Doug Burke
M aya Arksey - age 14 - came to ACE from Winnipeg and now boards with the Da Silva family. As an online student Maya has had to manage her time between her academics and tennis, and seems to handle that just fine -  she is in the running to finish two years early!

Maya qualified for the U16 and U18 Provincials and took the ACE U16 Provincial Circuit Championship title in February. Maya is pictured here with coach Doug Burke.

Katherine Adamec

Nicholas Adamec and his brother Alex who live in St.Augustine, Florida came to train with ACE for the month of March. Both boys and their mother Katherine brought a great deal of energy to the academy, which really impacted the coaches and players in a positive way.

Nicolas pictured here as the U16 Provincial Circuit Champion at Veneto.

We  truly appreciate the Adamec's effort of getting the boys here from Florida, and we hope to have them back in the near future!

U10 OTA CHAMPIONSHIPS
February 16th - 19th
The U10 OTA Championships is a special tournament because it is funded by a private donor who gives away $20,000 prize money split between the Boys/Girls Champions and Finalists. Because of this, the tournament draws many U10 players from all over the province and this year had 90 competitors. The OTA did a fantastic job organizing the event as they had roaming umpires, fruit/snacks and pizza provided for all the players, parents, and coaches who attended.

ACE Burlington players who participated: Maria Youssef, Clara Tiong, Gracie Sun, Anna Tabunshchyk, Mazhar Atassi, Mikail Iqbal, Mohammad Ali, and Eiji Fujita. Players from ACE Toronto were Melina Christopoulous, Ruzgar Iscen, Cadence Benchtrit, Luke Basiji and Cooper Arroyave.

From left to right; Maria Youssef, Eiji Fujita and Mohammed Ali.
All the players represented ACE extremely well with great behaviour, great competitive spirit, and a good attitude. These are the values that ACE demands players show while competing, and the coaching staff who watched them was very pleased to see how great they were in this respect. The competition for ACE players was highlighted by three individuals:  Maria Youssef was the girls finalist in flight C, Mohammad Ali was the boys finalist in flight B, and Eiji Fujita was the finalist of the championship flight which won him $4000 towards private training. Eiji's performance was especially impressive because on the final day before the semi-finals, he had come down with a fever and wasn't sure if he would be able to play. He not only played, but went on to beat the #1 seed. Unfortunately, he was out of gas in the final. It was a very gutsy performance on Eiji's part and he showed a lot of heart to go out and compete under those conditions.

Being a parent of an athlete is not easy.
It requires patience, persistence, and an understanding that it is a very long road to becoming great. I truly believe I coach players who have some excellent parents who understand this long term approach on development. The reason for this is because I take the time to discuss it with them as regularly as possible.

However, I think coaches all over North America need to keep educating parents on what to expect and how to do their part during this long journey. The first link below is an article I came across talking about many youth sport referees quitting due to abusive parents and coaches. I personally found this quite shocking and after reading it, I think it's absurd that people need to quit being a ref because of verbally abusive adults arguing over something that happened in a 10 and under soccer game which will have absolutely ZERO impact on their future development. The second link here is a video of an NCAA basketball coach talking about the difference of him being a coach and being a dad. Two very different roles which he clearly understands very well. CLICK  HERE

" An athletes body faces different demands than the average patient. Sports injuries are unique and the rehab that follows these injuries needs to be uniquely tailored as well. We will be conducting movement screening of ACE high performance athletes in order for us to gather baseline data on how the players move. In the unfortunate event that a player is injured, we will then already have knowledge of their specific mechanics and can use that to help direct treatment more efficiently. We will also use the screen as an opportunity to note errant movement patterns, muscle compensation and general movement capacity to make possible training/fitness recommendations to the coaches."
