Week of December 10, 2018

Each week through this year we will recognize several of our students through our "Warrior of the Week" award. Students receive this award for displaying effort that goes above-and-beyond our expectations - reflecting their drive to achieve personal and academic growth.
This week's Warriors of the Week are:
6th
Ryan R.
Ryan is an amazing 6th grader! He is always looking ahead to see what he does next, and even comes in for office hours when he technically doesn't need to. Ryan is very thorough in his work and takes pride in doing well.
7th
Caty W.
Caty comes to class every day prepared and with so much positivity! She is able to brighten the mood of every classroom she walks into. She leads by example and thinks of the rights and feelings of others; rather than her own. Caty has volunteered to help her community twice this week. She helped set up the Santa Workshop on Monday and volunteered again to work the Santa Shop on Thursday.
Josie and Addie W.
Whether it is prepping materials or directly working with students, Josie is happy to help. She recently came visited one of our special needs classrooms to help out with a science experiment. She worked one-on-one with a particular student and demonstrated patience and leadership. She is so sweet to all the students and embraces their differences.
Addie assisted in one of our special needs classrooms one day. She helped out with a social skills group. She demonstrated appropriate manners through modeling and role play. Addie also contributed to the confidence the students gained through the practice by encouraging them. Her kindness was so endearing.
8th
Payton K.
She has been doing a great job in all classes, putting effort into her work, as well as helping others. She especially did a great job researching and completing her social studies Mythbusters project by going above and beyond finding information out about her topic. She has shared future plans and seems to be working hard towards them! Great job, Payton!!

Food Drive
- We will be collecting cans again this year to donate to Fairview Hunger Center. We made
signs
for each mentoring group to place onto your box. We are asking each student to bring in one canned good to gain admission to the show.
VIP status is achieved when a mentoring group collects the most cans per student. We will be counting the number of cans and comparing it with the amount of students within the class.
All canned goods
will be
due Wednesday, December 19
th
. Student Council will be counting and delivering them.
VIPs will receive:
- Special seating up front
- Donuts during mentoring class on 12/21
- Recognition at the show and shout out on social media

, an organization that seeks to empower at-risk youth through writing and the arts, 48 new teen novels have been donated to the MMS/FHS library. Diverse characters and situations are a part of these added titles as it is important for all teens to be able to see themselves in the books they read. Please encourage students to stop by the library and check out our display, or better yet - a book!

Letters about Literature Contest
|
A librarian from Cleveland Public Library, Timothy Phillips, is coordinating this national reflective writing contest. Funding comes from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation.
Students are asked to write a heartfelt letter to an author, living or dead, from any genre-fiction (poem, short story, novel) or nonfiction (biography, memoir, autobiography)-that is contemporary or classic. They are to describe what the author's word meant to them and how they came to view themselves and their environment differently. Rather than a book report or fan letter, letters are to be considered a more private conversation with the author, and should be no more than 500 words.
Letters are encouraged to be completed and saved in MS Word, and can be uploaded online at
www.read.gov/letters

1st - $100
2nd - $75
3rd - $50
At all levels, and along with Honorable Finalists, entrants will receive age-appropriate books, as well as having their work published in a commemorative booklet and be invited to a special awards ceremony on Saturday, May 11th, 2019 at the Main Branch of Cleveland Public Library (downtown).

Student Leadership Academy
Student Mental Health Survey

A group of 11th grade students have been selected to participate in the First Ring Superintendents' Student Leadership Academy, a year-long leadership program for high school juniors in the sixteen districts that surround Cleveland Municipal School District.
These student leaders will build the skills and form the relationships to become change leaders in their schools and communities. The student leaders have chosen their year-long project on: "Mental health awareness, treatment, and acceptance."
Students will be distributing an anonymous electronic survey to their peers in grades 6-12 to collect some information about students who may be dealing with anxiety and/or depression either personally or through a friend or family member. The survey is anonymous and the data collected will help develop a plan to make sure the students of Fairview Park are getting the help they need to be successful.
Parents not wanting their student to participate in the survey should speak with their student prior to survey distribution on December 12.

6th Grade Parents: Coffee and Conversation

6th Grade Families,
We would like to invite you to "Coffee and Conversation" on December 12 from 9-10 a.m. at the Gemini Center. This is an opportunity to ask questions, share any concerns, etc. Ms. Carrie Sullivan, Family and Community Engagement Coordinator, will facilitate along with Mrs. Mary Cory, Middle School Counselor.

The Middle School Builders Club will be collecting items for the Giving Tree starting on Monday, December 3.
Please bring in new socks, gloves, mittens, hats and scarves to be placed on the Giving Tree, and donated to the Fairview Park Hunger Center.

Need information you can trust? Stop Googling and use the databases the district subscribes to.
What Is a Database?
Simply put, our subscription databases are collections of millions of articles that generally first appear in books, magazines, encyclopedias, newspapers, and many other reference sources. This means the articles have been checked thoroughly by editors and publishers. The information is reliable!
The FHS/MMS Library subscribes to two collections of databases: INFOhio and Gale.
To Access:
Go to the District webpage > click on Students > click on Core Tools > Click on FHS/MMS Library > hover over Research > click on Online Databases
You will find buttons to INFOhio, Gale and Passwords
Stay tuned for weekly database details.

Varsity Boys Basketball will take their talents to Quicken Loans Arena as part of the Cavs Elite High School Hoops Series. The game will take place on January 2, 2019 at 1:30 PM against the Panthers of Elyria Catholic. Following the Fairview game, fans are invited to attend the Cavs vs. Miami Heat game that evening at 7pm.
Tickets are $30 and include admission to both the Fairview vs. Elyria Catholic game as well as the Cavs game to follow.

Bring a check to the high school main office made out to Fairview High School with 'Cavs Tickets' in the memo line. Checks should be $30 times the number of tickets desired.

Fans will sit in the lower bowl area for the Fairview game in the afternoon. Cavs seats will be in Loudville. Seats purchased at the same time will be together for the night game. Teams/Players - see your coaches for details on purchasing seats together.

Every Friday from 7:45 am - 8:20 am ALL teachers will be available for academic assistance. Students can sign up with any teacher to get the help they need. Please encourage your child to take advantage of this opportunity!

What to do when you see an Incomplete
Don't panic!
Potential reasons for incomplete grades:

Students may not have completed all Projects in a course
-
Students have Cognitive Skill averages below 70%
-
Students have Math Concept averages blow 70%
-
Students are off pace OR off track, on Power Focus Areas
Often a fix is simply catching up on a Power Focus Area. Keep in mind that students can change incomplete grades into letter grades by completing any overdue Projects and improving their Cognitive Skill scores. Remember, the classroom teacher is always your best source of details. Never hesitate to reach out.

MAP benchmark testing round one is complete! Two more administrations will take place throughout the school year. Grade level Math and ELA teachers will be happy to provide you with specific dates and information.
Ohio State Testing will take place in the spring. These tests are extremely important for your child's long term success. It is never too early to begin getting ready!
