From 4Cs
August 2020
A Note From Our Executive Director
Dear friend of 4Cs,

The smell of freshly sharpened pencils. The squeaking sounds echoing the halls of new shoes. The butterflies of walking into a new classroom. The excitement of heading back to school reverberates this time of year as school typically open their doors to new and returning learners. This year, however, is anything but typical.

This year, 4Cs staff are working closely with community members to not just make sure that their child care needs are met while schools are transitioning to remote learning, but to help meet their most basic needs to survive during this time that is incredibly difficult for so many. Since the COVID-19 pandemic hit, we have distributed essential supplies to child care providers and families who have lost everything. Our outreach targeted community members who are at high risk or furthest from opportunity (you can read about our second round of deliveries to HPN families below as one example). Most recently, we used generous funds from Supervisor Valle's office to provide Basic Needs Boxes to community members. These boxes, full of laundry soap, dish soap, Kleenex, paper towels, disinfectant, spray bottles, masks cereal, diapers, and baby wipes were distributed to more than 90 families in our community. They also included children's books and information about the 2020 Census (see below for how you can still be sure you're counted). Every box provided a lifeline for families and showed our neighbors that we are in this together. We are looking forward to serving as many as we can in our communities as the pandemic continues (read more about how you can sign up for upcoming diaper distributions below). These distributions and deliveries, while welcomed with open arms, are addressing just the tip of the iceberg for so many in our community and we are humbled and grateful to provide what we can and look forward to serving even more families in the 4Cs community.

In addition to tangible needs, families and child care providers are reaching out for support and guidance surrounding child care. What child care sites are open? How do I get help paying for child care if I'm an essential worker? Can I have my child care payment covered if my child is learning remotely and in a child care setting? How do I obtain enough cleaning supplies and PPE to keep my staff and families safe? Why are ratio recommendations different depending on what department you ask? While our incredible Resource and Referral and Payment Assistance staff are always happy to help (call us at 510.582.2182), many questions surrounding child care during the shelter-in-place are being asked and addressed at the national, state, and county levels. Myself, as well as many on our management team, are on daily conference calls doing our best to plan, react, and respond as best we can to the constantly changing times, landscape, and directives.

As we approach this new, very different, school year together, know that 4Cs is doing all we can to advocate for you, keep you informed, and provide you with support so that you, your family, and our community members can thrive. Please join us in supporting our families in need by giving to 4Cs of Alameda County here, or reach out if you're in need - our staff is here to help.

Be well,

Renee S. Herzfeld

4Cs Diaper Program Expanding to Serve More Families
4Cs Diaper Project is expanding!! In October 2018, 4Cs of Alameda County's Monthly Diaper Project, in partnership with First 5 Alameda County and supplybank.org, allowed us to assist 75 children with monthly diapers and wipes for an entire year. With the piloting of this program in Oakland and South County, our team discovered that the need in our community for families who need diapers is greater than we imagined. First 5 recognized this great need and increased the number of children receiving diapers monthly in the second year of the diaper program to serve 100 children monthly. Now, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our regular monthly diaper project will be expanding once again to assist 500 children with diapers every month! 4Cs has been awarded a grant from the County of Alameda, Housing and Development Department to provide diapers, formula, and baby wipes for 5 months to 200 children who reside in the Ashland & Cherryland area. These supplies are in addition to the 100 children who are on our monthly diaper program (50 in Oakland & 50 in Southern Alameda County) who will be able to continue the program until the spring. We are also pleased that an additional 200 children will be served on an as-needed basis via our "Community Closet" beginning in September, 2020. Be on the lookout for more information to follow soon about this exciting growth in serving our families in need of diapers. Be sure to contact our Family Resource Coordinator, Chantae Wilson, at chantaew@4c-alameda.org if you are in need of diapers.

Diaper Kits and Relief Items Delivered to Grateful HPN Families
On August 13th, Hayward Promise Neighborhoods partners, including 4Cs of Alameda County, California State University East Bay, Alameda Public Health Department, Tiburcio Vasquez Health Center, and Tandem came together a second time to distribute COVID-19 relief bags and diaper kits. These diaper kits and relief bags were delivered to families in need within the south Hayward Promise Neighborhoods (HPN) footprint. With the help of 9 staff and volunteers, the team was able to help assemble and distribute diaper kits and relief bags. These items were individually delivered to HPN families while wearing face masks and practicing safe social distancing. In total, relief bags and diaper kits were delivered to 40 HPN families. Each family received diapers, baby wipes, and a resource bag complete with Census 2020 information, a children's book, Help Me Grow parent information, APHD safety guide information, and a $50 gift card to a local grocery store.

The distribution was an incredible team effort which ran safely and efficiently!
