Help make rural life better – today!
The Regional Wellbeing Survey’s mission is to help improve the wellbeing and quality of life of people living in rural and regional Australia, with the findings used by entities ranging from local governments to farming and community organisations to guide their activities and priorities. This year, additional questions ask about experiences of drought (past or present) and views about drought support, and in 2019 a report on supporting rural and regional communities during times of drought will be produced.
The survey is voluntary, confidential and anonymous, and closes today, 14 December 2018: please consider participating and sharing your valuable insights.
Access the survey here. For assistance or to have a paper copy posted to you, email regionalwellbeing@canberra.edu.au or call on 1800 981 499.

International
National and global distinctions to the quality of its olive oils, changes in their packaging and image, new approaches to olive cultivation and processing, and a greater product presence in international markets are some ingredients of the transformation of Extremadura’s olive sector, a change that is helping olive oil become a more relevant product in the economy of this Spanish community.
Olive oil is most commonly thought of as a kitchen staple, but for thousands of years it's also been used for all sorts of things that have nothing to do with food. Check out these smart alternative household uses for that unassuming bottle of olive oil hanging out in your pantry.
According to tradition, a small olive oil jar was used to light the menorah in the Second Temple in Jerusalem for eight whole days, after the Jews had successfully risen against their Greek-Syrian oppressors. Even today, many people still light their Hanukkah menorahs with olive oil candles.

And not just in Israel …
Last year, California's olive groves produced roughly 4 million gallons of olive oil. But because of this year's strange weather patterns–an unusually hot winter followed by a bout of cold–the California Olive Oil Council estimates that only about 2.8 million gallons will have been produced by the end of this year's harvest.

Spain is a giant in the olive oil world. The country produces almost half of the world’s olive oil, more than three times as much as Italy, Greece or Tunisia. Over 250 million olive trees grow in Spain.
Doctors frequently advise obese patients, particularly those with metabolic syndrome, to lose weight by adopting a healthy lifestyle. While low-fat and low-carb diets help in the short-term, research doesn’t support their long-term benefits. A new study found the combination of the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) and exercise promoted weight loss and reduced cardiovascular risk, benefits that were maintained after one year.
