Welcome to the September issue of the Sailing Science Center News. Outwardly, August was a much quieter month on the project, as people were on vacation and most of the work consisted of the tasks involved with establishing a new business, and event planning that is not mature enough to announce at this time. Suffice it to say that things are brewing that will be announced shortly.

Volunteer Spotlight - Meagan Strout
|
Yet another alumna of the Treasure Island Social Sailing program,
Meagan Strout was the star helmswoman of her boat in 2017, leading her team to victory with an unbeaten record. Interestingly, her first sailing experience came from time spent on a boat she and her father salvaged and restored while she was growing up on a Navy base in the Bahamas. The boat was demolished in a hurricane shortly after she and her family moved back to Florida, so she traded in sailboats for fishing boats, but still spent most of her youth on the water.
Meagan came back for more of the Social Sailing program in the 2018 Summer Session, distinguishing herself and showing her true grit by her unbroken attendance record, including the final day when she showed up with a broken arm and doctor’s orders not to sail (she went out on the coach boat instead).

Meagan holds a Bachelor of Applied Sciences in Hospitality Management from the University of Central Florida. She spent a decade working for The Breakers Palm Beach, The Ritz-Carlton and Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, before moving to the Bay Area to apply her passion for helping others as a Recruiting Manager. She now works at
Groupe Insearch where she partners with CEOs, Philanthropists, and Investors to place the top 1% in administrative support in the Bay Area, New York and Los Angeles.
Bright, cheerful, and with a natural desire to contribute, Meagan previously volunteered for the Florida Boxer Rescue, reflecting her other passion: dogs. And not just any dogs, but Boxers. Meagan rescued Herman (pictured here) in 2015 and he joined her family along with her other Boxer, Foster, who recently passed away at the age of 12.
Meagan has supported the SSC project by sharing ideas on recruiting, introducing us to potential resources, and prompting her company to quickly respond to our call in last month’s newsletter for office furniture by providing a generous donation of four much-needed office chairs. We want to take this opportunity to give a big shout out and Thank You to Meagan and
Groupe Insearch.

BYC Dinner Talk - September 15
|
Come to the Berkeley Yacht Club on September 15 for a presentation on the Sailing Science Center project and all the latest developments. Meet some of the key players and other like-minded people, while enjoying dinner at this fine club.

November 17 - Save the Date
|
We have something special in mind for November 17. We’ll announce it soon, but you may want to save the date on your calendar now. This event will be fun, informative and a worthwhile use of your time. It will also involve food and be on the water, if that gives you any ideas.

Volunteers Needed – We continue to seek volunteers in all areas of expertise. Areas of interest at this time are in marketing, fundraising, accounting and legal. Please reply to this email if you or someone you know is interested in volunteering.

|
Stuff Needed – The SSC office continues to need a small fridge, a microwave and a file cabinet. If you have used items you can donate, or access to items we can purchase at low cost it would be a big help!
