WORSHIP THIS SUNDAY
This Sunday, we will welcome our new Interim Pastor, Dr. Richard Graf, who will preach and preside during worship.
Our guest instrumentalist at both services will be Laney Barnett, a violinist. Laney attended the Brevard Music Center last summer, and is currently a junior who is dual-enrolled in Asheville High School and A-B Tech. She recently won high honors in the Asheville Spotlight on Young Musicians competition.

DELVING INTO GOD'S GRACE (DiGG) CLASS
Sundays from 9:10 to 10:00 a.m.,
Conference Room
Join Linea Warmke as she leads a lectionary study on the texts for this Sunday. Learn how one preacher studies for a sermon. What is Transfiguration and how does it relate to our lives? Why is Moses part of the Transfiguration? What does "God's Glory" mean? Those and many other questions will be discussed. If you go to first service, this study will relate back to the sermon you just heard. If you go to second service, this class will give you a better understanding and lay the groundwork for the sermon you are about to hear.
During Lent, Bill Johnson will lead a six-week course on "The Five Promises of Our Baptism." When we are baptized, we, or our sponsors, make promises. How do we live those promises on a daily basis? Bill always provides us with a timely topic and good discussion. This class will be a relevant addition to your Lenten discipline.

INTERSECTIONS CLASS
On March 3, the class will look at the book
United Against Racism: Churches for Change, written by the National Council of the Churches in the USA, of which the ELCA is a member.
Kimberly Dunbar will lead the discussion of this book, which she was introduced to last semester in one of her seminary theology classes.
The Intersections Class discusses a variety of topics that connect faith and life during the Sunday School time (9:10 to 10:00 a.m.). The program part of the class runs from 9:30 to 10:00 a.m., but people are welcome to come early and stay late to chat and enjoy refreshments. Please come join us in Room 6 to share your perspectives and hear from others.

ASH WEDNESDAY AND MID-WEEK LENTEN SERVICES
On
Wednesday, March 6
, we will hold an Ash Wednesday service at 5:30 p.m.
On Wednesdays from March 13 through April 10, join us for Lenten soup suppers at 5:45 p.m. and Lenten worship at 6:30 p.m. There is no need to sign up for the dinners - just come and enjoy!

LENTEN MID-WEEK SPEAKERS
What does it mean to live out your faith in daily life? In the Affirmation of Baptism liturgy, the
daily walk of faith is described this way:
1. To live among God's faithful people.
2. To hear the word of God and share in the Lord's Supper.
3. To proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed.
4. To serve all people, following the example of Jesus Christ.
5. To strive for justice and peace in all the earth.
Do you have a story from your life related to one of these five themes? Maybe you could talk about a time when it mattered that you "lived among God's faithful people," or maybe you see a direct connection between being Christian and the work you do for justice.
We are looking for five people to speak at our mid-week Lenten services, each for about five minutes on one of the themes above as it relates to your own life and experience.
The dates are Wednesdays between
March 13 and April 10.

KOINONIA COMMUNITY LENTEN SERVICES
Again this year, the congregations that form Koinonia are hosting a 30-minute noon worship service, followed by lunch, during the Lenten season. As a part of the service, a local charitable organization is invited to speak briefly about its work, and participants have an opportunity to contribute to a free will offering that is given to the charity. Each year, the Koinonia Lenten series raises more than $3,500 for local causes, and people from different faith communities - or no faith community - come together for worship and fellowship with one another.

REMINDER - SHROVE TUESDAY PANCAKE SUPPER!
Church Council members will be in the kitchen making the pancakes and sausage for the Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper, hosted in conjunction with the Fellowship Committee, on March 5 from 5:00 - 6:30 p.m. They will be making three kinds of pancakes this year - plain, blueberry and pecan (which were in VERY high demand last year!). Pancake syrup and a bananas fosters/caramel topping will be provided. Diners are encouraged to bring their own favorite toppings to share - so if you like strawberries and whipped cream on your pancakes, bring it along!
Please remember to sign up on the bulletin board this Sunday if you plan to attend.

The Fellowship Committee wishes to sincerely thank everyone who came out to the recent Fish Fry in support of Sharing House. We served 73 fish dinners, donated six very heavy boxes of food to the Sharing House pantry and will be making a cash donation that we expect will exceed our initial expectations as soon as the dinner expenses are cleared. A special thanks goes to Frank McConnell who not only provided free entertainment for our diners during the evening, but also donated Crooked Pine CDs that were sold at the door with all proceeds going to Sharing House. LCGS's first Fabulous Friday Fundraiser Fish Fry was...fabulous!

HEARING LOSS ASSOCIATION MEETING
This group's next meeting will be on Saturday, March 9 at 1:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall at Good Shepherd. The room will open at 12:30 p.m. so people sign in, browse the free literature available, and meet others interested in discussing hearing problems and solutions. All are welcome.
Our program will feature Francisca Hernandez, MA LSLS, Parent Educator/Hispanic Outreach for BEGINNINGS for parents of children who are deaf and hard of hearing. BEGINNINGS is a non-profit that helps parents and families understand hearing loss and the diverse needs of children who are deaf or hard of hearing from birth to age 22 years. They provide impartial support to families regarding early intervention services, school age support, resources and modes of communication. BEGINNINGS parent educators also provide support to the professionals who serve these families.

Wanda Waters is recovering from hip surgery on February 26. She will spend a few days in the hospital and then transfer to rehabilitation facility to complete her healing.

FAIR TRADE SALE THIS SUNDAY
On March
3
, at both coffee hours, come visit the fair trade sale in the Fellowship Hall, where you can purchase an assortment of coffee, chocolate, tea, and other fair trade foods at wholesale prices.
Fair trade is essentially a way of doing business that aims to treat small-scale farmers and artisans fairly and take care of the environment, while allowing consumers to make purchases that support their values.

People who help in the farming and production of chocolate, coffee and tea that is not fair trade are often exposed to dangerous working conditions. Here is a recent

KITS FOR LUTHERAN WORLD RELIEF
This Lenten season, Good Shepherd will make personal care kits for Lutheran World Relief. Each week in Lent, we'll collect items to make these kits that help people around the world stay healthy in difficult situations, like natural disasters and displacement due to violence. On Palm Sunday, we'll assemble the kits during the coffee hours in the Fellowship Hall.
Please bring your donations in starting on February 10, and place them in the large bin on the pew in the commons. Here is the collection schedule:
- March 10: Bars of Soap (4 - 5 oz, any brand, in original wrapping)
- March 17: Bath Towels (light-weight, maximum 52" x 27", dark color)
- March 24: Toothbrushes (adult size, individually wrapped in original packaging or sealed individually in a paper envelope)
- March 31: Combs
- April 7: Nail Clippers (metal, attached file optional)

2. Make donations to the Augustine Literacy Project through Google Pay, a secure online site. Our team goal is
$1,000 and we have only a few weeks to raise this amount!

SOAP COLLECTION FOR THE PHILIPPINES
Florence Nightingale Global Health is collecting bars of soap to send to their friends in the Philippines. As you may know, FNGH, and our own Ann Farash and Paul Onnink in conjunction with them, have been working in partnership with the people of North Samar, who commonly live on
less than $2 per day, and cannot afford soap.
Any size bars of soap will be accepted, even the small bars found in hotel rooms.
Please drop off your bars of soap in the box on the pew in the commons. The soap will be shipped to the Philippines at the end of March. Thank you!

14TH ANNUAL EMPTY BOWL SOUP LUNCH

All are welcome to attend this fundraiser at First United Methodist Church in Brevard to benefit the Bread of Life. The cost is $20 for lunch and a handmade bowl from Mud Dabbers Pottery, or $5 for lunch only. The event will include live music. Call 577-0477 for more information.

TRANSYLVANIA COUNTY TRIAD MEETING
Triad is a national partnership among law enforcement, older adults, and those providing services to older adults. Triad's focus is to reduce the criminal victimization of older citizens, decrease unwarranted fear of crime, and improve the safety and quality of life for older adults.
The next Transylvania County Triad meeting will be held on Monday, March 25, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., in the
DSS Building Downstairs Conference Room. They will discuss upcoming Triad events for 2019, so bring any ideas you may have. All are welcome. For more information, contact

GRANT US GRATITUDE
Here is a reflection from Bishop Tim of the NC Synod.
I've worked with more than one congregational treasurer in parishes I've served who insisted on publicizing in every bulletin and newsletter how far behind the budget we were. But whenever we edged ahead in income vs. budget or expenses, they would insist that we mustn't let people know. They assumed people are motivated mainly by scarcity. I still think those treasurers were wrong. People give because they believe in the mission our giving supports.

LEADERSHIP:
Nurturing the Song of the Church
ELCA Deacon Ryan Hostler sees his life's calling as one that involves equipping others with the tools they need to sing and worship God. As minister of word and service for music and worship at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Vero Beach, FL, Hostler oversees the church's music program, plans services and serves as cantor.
As a leader in the church, he draws on his music training and educational experience, particularly those gained at Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Columbus, Ohio. Trinity is one of the ELCA's seven seminaries; each receive annual Mission Support grants to sustain their work in training leaders like Hostler for service in the church.
