Bookseller Recommendations

William Recommends:
Virgil Wander by Leif Enger
Virgil is the projectionist at a down-and-out movie theater in a small town in Minnesota, and this lyrical novel puts him in the middle of small town drama, the sort everybody recognizes, but taken up a notch.  The humor is folksy and the eccentric characters twirl around him like the kites created by his erstwhile roommate.  I grew up in a small town, and the author gets every little detail right, from the unpredictable weather that only citizens could love to the way relationships bloom in the most unlikely of places.

Colleen Recommends:
Time's Convert by Deborah Harkness
Fans of the "All Souls Trilogy" will immediately be immersed in the world of the Bishop and deClermont families.  Those who haven't read the trilogy -- fear not!  This story stands on its own legs of history, romance, magic, and the supernatural.  It's a fabulous journey from the battlefields of the Revolutionary War to contemporary Europe.  Pour yourself a glass of wine and enjoy!

Maeve In America by Maeve Higgins
Until I picked up a copy of Maeve In America, I had never heard of Maeve Higgins.  What I quickly discovered was that she is hilarious, poignant, charming, whip-smart and, on top of all that, a wonderful essayist whose writing ranges from laugh-out-loud funny to engaging and insightful. This book contains a lot of intelligence, compassion, and a biting self-awareness -- all qualities I love in my non-fiction reading.

Rebecca Recommends:
The Friend by Sigrid Nunez
The protagonist -- a writing teacher and a cat person -- inherits a Great Dane after the death of her friend and mentor with whom she shares a long and complicated history.  Fans of pared-down writing and sensitive explorations of human/animal (and human/human) bonds will love this novel.  It has also been nominated for a National Book Award.

Hey, Kiddo
by Jarrett J. Krosoczka

Jarrett Krosoczka's graphic novel memoir, Hey, Kiddo, is a story that will tear your heart into pieces only to put it back together again as it follows Krosoczka's life from the time that his mother, a heroin addict, is incarcerated to the search for his biological father as a teenager. This graphic novel marks his first work for an older crowd.   Hey, Kiddo tackles themes and issues such as neglect and addiction, the latter of which helps to make this a timely and important story.
