Researcher Awarded NIH Funds
To Study Oral Bacteria

Dr. Narayanan Ramasubbu last month received $437,250 from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to study how a bacterium that causes periodontal disease is able to survive in the body. Ramasubbu, and his co-principal investigator for the study, Dr. Mayilvahanan Shanmugam, believe that understanding how the bacterium thrive in the complex oral microbial world could help prevent dental diseases and some types of heart disease.  LEARN MORE

RSDM Offers New Sleep Apnea Treatment for Underserved Patients

Dr. Sowmya Ananthan holds a dental device for sleep apnea patients.
It's estimated that 22 million Americans suffer from sleep apnea, which can cause high blood pressure, acid reflux disease and increase the risk of stroke. But 80 percent of cases go undiagnosed. For lower income patients, lack of affordable healthcare makes it even harder to get properly diagnosed and treated. RSDM is now working with Horizon Medicaid HMO to allow coverage for a newer form of sleep apnea treatment. We are the only providers in New Jersey to offer it to low-income patients.   LEARN MORE

RSDM's student research publication, The Rutgers Journal of Dentistry, is eagerly looking for submissions. "The main idea is to show what people here do," said second-year student Taha Azimaie, an editor of the journal. All journal submissions are peer-reviewed, selected, and edited entirely by students to showcase the work of classmates throughout RSDM.

Faculty and Students Help Fight Oral Cancer
The RSDM community had a strong showing at an annual oral cancer walk in rural N.J.

Sixty RSDM students and faculty helped raise $25,000 to battle oral cancer last weekend at a Sucasunna fundraiser. The event was held in memory of Christine Carratura, who died of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the salivary glands in 2008. Her daughter, Gabrielle, who sponsored the fundraiser, believes her mom would have survived the disease if she recognized early-stage symptoms and sought treatment.
