Please contact Lisa Hill, New Canaan Fresh Air Fund Chairperson, at 203-594-9472 or  [email protected] or visit our website ( www.freshair.org) for information about the program. 2017-2018 *REVISED* Calendar

April 6, 2018

Dear Parents,

Despite our unpredictable weather, a sure sign that spring is here is the 8th grade's upcoming Confirmation on April 21st.

This past week included a special visit from Congressman Himes who met with the S.L.A.M. students about "Leadership". Our students represented St. A's in a very respectful and inquisitive manner with an impressive dialogue giving him promise for our future!

We want to thank Mr. Mahony and his first grade class for hosting First Friday Mass today. Once again they went above and beyond! Also, in attendance was Marge Pavlov from the Daughters of the American Revolution. She praised the students' excellent essays that were submitted to this year's contest for Grades 5-8. Topic was "World War I: Remembering the War to End All Wars". First place in 5th grade was Charlotte McGinness, in 6th grade was Bernadette McNamara and 7th grade was Julianna LaMagna!

This week we have so many reasons to be proud of our students; in particular with our Read to Feed contest. This year our top three readers in the school came from one family: Lilly, Anna and Noelle Gayer. Reading is truly a family affair! In addition, our top three fundraisers all came from first grade; Juliet Raciti, Olivia Gabriele and Veronica McRoskey really got those donations in.   Mrs. Moran was proud to report that our school community raised almost $3,000 for Heifer International. The organization will be able to purchase every kind of animal to be delivered to communities throughout the world in an effort to teach sustainability.   This spring 2018, a generous donor has offered to match all Read To Feed donations. This means that our students have had twice the impact in helping end hunger and poverty.

Thanks to our very own art teacher, Mrs. Andrei who assisted our students in the Decorated Cow Contest. Ballots were filled out by our priests and staff (no faculty). In the K-2 category, coming in First place, Amy Rodriguez, Second place, Aliviamarie Covino, and Third place, Abbygail Covino. In the Grade 3-5 category, First place went to Mavi Triantafyllos and Second place to Lauren Smith. In the Grade 6-8 category the First place winner was Ryan Smith.

Quarter three report cards were mailed yesterday. Please contact the main office if you do not receive your child(ren)'s report card.

Please click here to view additional pictures from this week's events! Enjoy your spring recess!

God Bless You!

It's that time! Open House signs are in.

Update from S.L.A.M.

On Wednesday, April 4, the S.L.A.M. group had the amazing honor of hearing United States Congressman Jim Himes talk about his experiences as a leader. During his presentation, the Congressman talked about his job as a representative of Connecticut's Fourth District, incorporating his opinion on what traits make a successful leader, which he demonstrated when he listened to our questions and answered with his thoughts on a variety of topics.

Congressman Himes talked about the importance of listening, leading by example, and empathy. These traits are what he believes shapes a successful leader. Jim Himes created an interactive presentation where he was open to answering our questions as well as sharing many of his past experience, offering advice of his own. Through this, he was an example of listening as a leader. In this, he also demonstrated another one of his three leadership qualities: lead by example. Congressman Himes knows that people in any position of power are carefully scrutinized, so they need to be examples of good and honest people. Congressman Himes' last important trait for a leader was empathy. He provided a definition of his own for the word as the ability to "put yourself in someone else's shoes." He described how this was an important aspect of a leader, and how it is something young leaders should aim to attain.

Having the Congressman in to talk to the S.L.A.M. group is an experience we are unlikely to forget. His advice is a fantastic addition to our knowledge of leadership so far. We are truly grateful for this opportunity.
