Summer School, Transition, and More!

Dear Parents,

As announced last week, summer school will be held from Wednesday, June 13, to Friday, July 20. We will be closed on July 4th, 5th, and 6th for Independence Day. Summer school transportation will be the same as last year's: we will only offer afternoon buses to students living 3 or more miles from their campus. Look for more information regarding building assignments in next week's newsletter.

Have questions about the transition? Remember that the K-12 Growth Plan page on our website is always a good resource to read before contacting others with questions.

I would also like to remind 8th-grade parents that graduation will take place at 6 pm on Tuesday, June 5th at the Scottish Rite temple, located at 1330 Linwood Blvd, Kansas City, MO 64109.

Last but not least, we had the pleasure this week to welcome Chris Neher as our Development Director. He is relatively new to Kansas City but has 18 years of fundraising experience. Welcome aboard!

Stay warm over this cold weekend!

STEAM Night

Our second annual STEAM Night at Cherry was a great success. A special thanks to Dr. Zdenka Guadarrama-Brandt and our team of volunteers (parents, teachers, local high schools, universities, and community partners). Students from all grades were able to make slime, learn about owls, practice writing code, play with robots, and so much more. In addition, this year Mme Vaughn organized an art show to put the "A" in STEAM. Thank you to everyone who participated.

Host Families still Neededhost

Carol Saunders and her children Charlotte and Logan Brettell hosted Pauline Surget this year.

"Pauline has been a wonderfully cheerful addition to our family this year! It's been an interesting exchange of culture, ideas, language, food, and quirks--we have learned a lot from her and probably get more out of the arrangement than she does. She has a fabulous sense of humor and is always ready for games and fun. She's like a big sister to the kids and a cross between an only slightly younger sister-girlfriend and older daughter for me. We love her so much that we are following her home to Nantes in June to meet her family!"

-Carol Saunders, Host Family member

Would your family consider hosting an intern for the upcoming school year? Interns are university students from French speaking countries who are pursuing a career in education and apply to spend a year working in the classrooms of our youngest students. I review intern candidates' resumes, review references, interview them in depth and make sure they are a good fit for our school. They also fill out a lengthy questionnaire about the host family experience that helps me match them with host families.

Host families open their homes and welcome an intern for a semester or for a year. They provide a private bedroom and meals when you are together as a family. The school provides a generous monthly stipend to the intern and a monthly city bus pass.

If you would like more information about hosting, please contact Diane Balagna,

Painless Fundraisingfundraising

It's that time again! The Painless Fundraising Committee will be collecting labels at the end of April so please send in all Box Tops, Best Choice, and Tyson A+ labels to your teachers. Please be sure to label your baggie with your teacher's name so that your class gets credit. If you have a lot of labels, it would speed up counting if you could separate them into different baggies by label type. The class from each campus with the most labels will win a party at the end of the school year! This is an ongoing program so please continue collecting throughout the year.

If you are interested in helping us count on Sunday, April 29, or have questions about the painless fundraising program, contact Lynne Yarnevich at
lynneporthouse@hotmail.com.

A Message from the Oak Nursevaccines

7th-grade families,  shot_preparation.jpg

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services establishes the minimum immunization requirements for children enrolled in Missouri public, private, and parochial schools. These include a Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis) vaccine and a Meningococcoal vaccine required for all incoming 8 th grade students.

It is your responsibility to give a copy of the updated shot records to the school nurse. These immunizations are required to be on file with in the nurse's office prior to students beginning their 8 th- grade year or attending summer school.

Children typically receive these vaccinations around age 11 or 12, so it is likely your child has already been vaccinated. Please contact your child's doctor to get an updated record sent to the school as soon as possible. If your child has not yet had these vaccinations, please plan to have your child immunized or ask the nurse about signing an exemption before the beginning of the 2018-2019 school year or summer school.

Thank you!
