Chapter President

Dear NASW-FL Members,

My thoughts and hope for safety are with you during this post Hurricane Michael period of recovery. Throughout Florida, we have seen first-hand and through photographs, the incomprehensible devastation so many people have experienced. Now the power outages, personal and community losses, present additional challenges in the days ahead. I experienced the kindest gesture yesterday morning when I answered the door to find a neighbor standing there with a carafe of freshly brewed coffee. He was fortunate to have a generator so he walked from door to door filling our cups. It provided a moment of respite between cleanup efforts.

May you each experience the kindness of strangers and the love and support of family and friends.

If there is anything that NASW-FL can do for you, please contact the Chapter Office via email:  [email protected]
- the phones are not working at this time.

Carol Campbell Edwards
NASW-FL President
Student Representatives Column

Greetings Everyone!

The NASW leadership team has been busy encouraging students to register and get ready to vote. As Election Day nears, remember that midterms are an opportunity to make your voice heard at the state and local level.

We've also been busy discussing ways to connect social work students from across the state, to increase collaboration between local units and schools of social work, and to make the Annual Conference more student-centered.

I'd love to hear your thoughts about how we can make NASW membership more meaningful to students. Be on the lookout for what NASW Florida is doing on behalf of social workers and how you can get involved.

Thank you,
NASW-FL Member
Credential Update

Please congratulate Jay S. Hyman, ACSW,C-ASWCM, Certified Advanced Social Work Case Mana, an NASW-FL member with achieving additional credentials this past September.
Voting and Political Action
Is Social Work!
by Ruth Brandwein, Political Action for Candidate Election Chair and Dawn Brown, Legislative Committee Chair
"It was the worst of times, it was the best of times."   Although there is understandable despair among many based on the unjust and inhumane treatment of everyone from migrant children and their families to women, people of color and our LGBT community, there also seems to be a reaction growing in the country that will hopefully lead to positive, equitable change.
As social workers, we have "Ethical Responsibilities to the Broader Society."  According to the NASW (2017) Code of Ethics, "Social workers should engage in social and political action that seeks to ensure that all people have equal access to the resources, employment, services, and opportunities they require to meet their basic human needs and to develop fully.  Social workers should act to expand choice and opportunity for all people, with special regard for vulnerable, disadvantaged, oppressed, and exploited people and groups. " Legislative advocacy before, during and after election season, along with the endorsement of political candidates that promote these values are central to our work as professional social workers!
NASW-FL has two arms that support and promote that involvement:
One is the NASW-FL Legislative Committee.  Each year our Board of Directors vote on the Legislative & Policy Advocacy Agenda. We organize our annual LEAD (Legislative Education and Advocacy Day) in Tallahassee to provide students and social work professionals the opportunity to engage in advocacy with our elected officials.   We have Legislative Chairs in each unit along with Interest Chairs for the state that promote our NASW policy agenda through meetings with legislators and advocacy of support or opposition to specific bills.  As social workers, we know the importance of establishing relationships and "starting where the client is."  These skills are paramount to be able to effectively support our legislative agenda and have sustainable change for our profession and the well-being of those we serve.
The other arm is PACE-Political Action for Candidate Election.  Because we endorse and make contributions to candidates we are a separate entity, a 501(c)6.  We endorse candidates at the state level, but if a social worker is running for a local office, we can endorse them as well.  We have a small fund that we use to make strategic contributions to candidates who have a good chance of election and who need our money.  NASW National PACE endorses candidates at the federal level.
How Do We Endorse?  PACE is non-partisan and our criteria are based on the candidate's record, and their policy positions as articulated on their social media platforms and/or at forums. If we have good reason to believe they will support our policy, social justice and professional issues we will support them.  We encourage all of our members to suggest candidates for endorsement.
This year our PACE Committee had an exciting meeting to endorse several excellent candidates, including five social workers running for local office.

Social Workers in Local Races:
  • Katharine Campbell, City Commissioner, Wilton Manors
  • Nancy Makar, Hernando County Commissioner, District 4
  • Cheryl McDougall, Brevard County School Board, District 2
  • Mitch Rosenwald, City Commissioner, Oakland Park
  • Karen Perez, Hillsborough County School Board, District 6
Mitch and Kat are former presidents of NASW-FL.  We encourage social workers to run for office at all levels of government. As social workers, we believe that if you do not like the way things are going, be a part of the solution!

Statewide Races:

At the state level, we were proud to endorse and contribute to the campaign of Andrew Gillum for Governor. He will make a great governor! His platform mirrors our issues-from Medicaid Expansion to affordable housing. He is also strong on environmental issues.
We have similarly endorsed and contributed to Sean Shaw for Attorney General. Sean was in the State Legislature and sponsored or co-sponsored several of the bills that NASW-FL supported during the 2018 legislative session. Sean has proven himself to be a true advocate for social justice and other values aligned with our profession.
Endorsed Candidates for Florida Senate:
  • Aaron Bean (R) - District 4
  • Kayser Enneking (D) District 8
  • Melissa Martin (D) District 14
  • Amanda Murphy (D) District 16
  • Janet Cruz (D) District 18
  • Gayle Herrell (R) District 25
  • Annette Taddeo (D) District 40
Endorsed Candidates for Florida House:
  • Tracye Polson (D) - District 15 (Social Worker)
  • Jason Haeseler (D) - District 21
  • Lee Mangold (D) - District 28
  • Anna Eskamani (D) - District 47
  • Amy Mercado (D) - District 48
  • Carlos Guillermo Smith (D) - District 49
  • Pamela Dirschka (D) - District 50
  • Phil Moore (D) - District 53
  • Debra Bellanti (D) District 60
  • Fentrice Driskell (D) District 63
  • Jennifer Webb (D) District 69
  • Tracy Pratt (D) District 71
  • Margaret Good (D) District 72
  • Liv Coleman (D) District 73
  • Emma Collum (D) District 93
  • Cindy Sofia Polo (D) District 103
  • Javier Fernandez (D) District 114
  • Jeffrey Solomon (D) District 115
  • Holly Raschein (R) District 120
Please make sure to vote and encourage others to do the same. We have "Voting is Social Work" buttons-call the office to get yours!

Please support the NASW-FL PACE-endorsed candidates in your area and contribute to their campaigns.  It is also important to contribute to PACE so we will have funds to contribute in the future.

In the words of Shirley Chisholm, the first Black Woman elected to the United States Congress, "If they don't give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair." We invite you to bring your folding chairs to make sure the voices of our clients and our profession are heard!

Please contact Dawn Brown ([email protected]) if you would like to get involved with the NASW-FL Legislative Committee.

Please contact Ruth Brandwein ([email protected]) to learn more about NASW-FL PACE.

You can also contact the NASW-FL office ([email protected]) with any questions, comments or ideas

 To U.S. Rep. Bill Posey:
Brevard Democrats are
not 'radical' | Opinion

The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) is the largest membership organization of professional social workers in the world, with more than 120,000 members in the US, and of those 4,500 members here in Florida.Republican U.S. Rep. Bill Posey labeled our Brevard County Democratic Executive Committee as "a group known for its radical tactics and agenda" in a FLORIDA TODAY guest column last month.

The Democratic Party of Brevard County is undertaking an important experiment for Democracy. We understand that unlimited and unaccountable money is the root cause of many of the problems we have with our government. It allows corporations, lobbyists, special interests and even foreign countries to exert a disproportionate influence on the outcomes of our elections.

VOTE YES on Amendment 4
by Jill S. Levenson, Ph.D., LCSW, Professor of Social Work Barry University, Ellen Whiteside McDonnell School of Social Work / Center for Human Rights & Social Justice & Fabio A. Naranjo, PhD, MSW Assistant Professor Barry University Ellen Whiteside McDonnell School of Social Work

As a social worker interested in social justice, vote YES on Ballot Amendment 4 in Florida's November general election. The amendment restores the right to vote for people with a felony conviction, after completion of incarceration, probation, and parole. The amendment excludes convictions for murder and sex crimes.

There are many good reasons for social workers to support and actively advocate for voting yes to Amendment 4.
  • It is estimated that over 1.5 million Florida residents or 8% of Florida's voting age population is disenfranchised due to felony convictions, and this disproportionately impacts our lower income and minority communities.
  • About 23% of black persons age 18 years or older in Florida are disenfranchised due to a felony record, and that accounts for nearly one in five African American males in the state.
  • Consequently, disadvantaged communities have less power to elect officials who will represent their social justice interests.
  • Florida is one of only 4 states where people convicted of felonies cannot regain the right to participate in our democracy- the three others being Iowa, Kentucky, and Virginia.
  • Research indicates that risk for criminal recidivism is reduced and successful reintegration is enhanced through civic engagement - this includes investment in one's community by exercising the right to vote (Manza & Uggen, 2008).
  • There is no empirical evidence or public interest rationale to support a vote of NO to Amendment 4.
  • As called for in the preamble to the NASW Code of Ethics "The primary mission of the social work profession is to enhance human well-being and help meet the basic human needs of all people, with particular attention to the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty."
Vote for social justice in Florida by voting YES for Amendment 4.
