For those of you who have been longtime friends of the Hanahau'oli School Professional Development Center and for those of you who are new -- we are honored to work alongside you as we join together to build upon the the school's rich progressive education tradition to support the development of school communities that promote a better future society for today's children. Amidst celebrations of our school's one hundred year-old history, we have embarked on a careful reflection of the ways we at the Hanahau'oli School Professional Development Center embody our progressive roots, and are proud to announce a number of changes in our organization. 
MEET OUR  NEW TEAM
Dr. Amber Strong '89 Makaiau joined Hanahau'oli School in August 2018 as the Director of the Professional Development Center, but she is no newcomer to our school community. Dr. Makaiau is both a current parent and alumna of Hanahau'oli School, and she shares a personal connection that extends even farther as a descendent of founders Sophie and George Cooke. Dr. Makaiau shares her time at Hanahau'oli with the University of Hawai'i, Manoa, where she is currently an Associate Specialist in the Institute for Teacher Education Secondary Program as well as the  Director of Curriculum and Research at the Uehiro Academy for Philosophy and Ethics in Education.  (Learn more...)
 
Supporting Amber is PDC Coordinator, Veronica Kimi, who holds an MEd in Education from Chaminade University and a BA in Communication Studies from UCLA. The mission of the Professional Development Center at Hanahau'oli is to build upon the school's rich progressive education tradition to support the development of school communities that promote a better future society for today's children. UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII, MANOA COLLEGE OF EDUCATION PARTNERSHIP
In 2018, Hanahau'oli School established a formal partnership with the University of Hawaii, Manoa College of Education.  With a mutual desire to expose students to progressive, interdisciplinary, and inquiry-based approaches to learning, Hanahau'oli School has been designated as a Professional Development School (PDS).  (Learn more...)

GRANT AWARDED FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE IN EDUCATION
The Hanahauʻoli School Professional Development Center, in partnership with the UH Mānoa College of Education, is launching a new joint initiative to advance social justice education. A collaboration with the nationally renowned Teaching Tolerance program, this three-year $100,000 Social Justice in Education project is aimed at growing local educators' capacity for educating children and youth to be active participants in a diverse democracy. Made possible by the generosity and forward thinking of longtime Teaching Tolerance supporters, Jana and Howard Wolff, the ambitious initiative supports the Hanahauʻoli School PDC's public mission by building upon the school's rich progressive education tradition.

Teachers Teaching Teachers: The Professional Development Center (PDC) at Hanahauʻoli offers workshops and coursework about best practices in education with a particular emphasis upon early childhood and the elementary years. Made possible through an endowment from the Clarence T.C. Ching Foundation, programs include teachers from both public and private schools joining together to create learning communities that foster 21st century skills.
