National Writing Contest Semi-Finalists!
Letters About Literature is a national writing contest inviting students to write to an author, living or dead, expressing how a work affected the reader.  From over 750 entries from Wisconsin, 58 semi-finalists were selected by judges at the National level.  Two of these semi-finalists are freshmen in Mrs. Zimpel's Honors English 9 in Cohort.  Both Abby Hawkins and Rachel Norton's letters are being judged for state level prizes.  Their accomplishments will be celebrated at the Untitledtown Book Festival in Green Bay later this month.  We wish them the best of luck in the next round of competition.

March Madness Tournament Results
In a tumultuous tournament of upsets, one-point wins, and clutch buzzer-beating shots many brackets were 'busted' early. The following elite few managed to navigate around the misfortunes of their fellow competitors and found their way to victory. Special congratulations to Craig Beine, overall winner of the 2018 HUHS March Madness tournament and to Tammy Rolsma, last year's first place winner and this year's third place finisher.  Thank you to everyone who participated and to Mr. Kasza's Sports & Entertainment Marketing class for promoting and hosting the tournament. Top finishers in places 1 - 5 please remember to see Mr. Helms to receive your prize.

UW Campus Regional Placement Testing

Senior students who have been admitted to a UW campus are invited to participate in Regional Placement Testing. As a result of taking the tests, students find out their appropriate level of math, English, and foreign language to begin in college.
Students can register online for Regional Placement Testing, beginning February 1. The benefit of Regional Placement Testing is that students can take the test close to where they live, and they don't need to travel to the campus that they'd like to attend. Also, students need register for only one placement test even if they have been admitted to different UW campuses, or if they change their mind about which UW campus to attend. All UW campuses have access to each student's scores.

Early College Credit Program (ECCP)

The 2017-19 State of Wisconsin Biennial Budget included new language regarding high school students who take courses for college credit. The budget combines the Course Options and Youth Options programs into a single new program called the Early College Credit Program (ECCP).
High school students at public and private high schools may be permitted to enroll in a UW System institution, or an alternative private, non-profit institution of higher education to take courses to earn high school credit, post-secondary credit, or both. Course costs are shared among the school district/private school and the state (and in some cases, the student's family).
Students in grades  9-12 may be eligible to take courses during the fall, spring, or summer semesters. Students may submit their completed forms to school officials by  March 1 for summer/fall semester - or  October 1for spring semester.
For more information, contact your child's counselor.

ACT TESTING - 2017-18

All students considering a two or four-year college experience are reminded to take the ACT test during their junior year.  Students can register for the ACT at www.actstudent.org. When registering, students will need the HUHS school code, which is 500-850.   Please remember to check the website to see if the college(s) your son or daughter is considering requires or recommends the ACT writing test.   The test fee for the ACT is $46.00 and the ACT with writing is $62.50.   If you feel you cannot afford the test fee, please ask your child's counselor if you are eligible for a fee waiver.

HUHS is an ACT test center for all testing dates (except February 10).  The test dates for the 2017-2018 school year are:

April 14, 2018                                     June 9, 2018                                     July 14, 2018

Note:   Please keep in mind all juniors are required by state law to take the ACT at the high school on February 27 (no cost to the student on February 27).    When considering whether or not to sign up to take the February 10 or April 14 ACT, it may be best for students to take the February 27 test, then decide whether or not to retake the test in June or July based upon February results.

Athletics and Activities
Baseball Preview
Hartford Union returns four all-conference players this season, led by senior third baseman Blake Lazaris, who was a first-team All-Wisconsin Little Ten Conference selection a season ago.  Seniors Myles Zimdars (RF), and Zach Braun (C) and junior Scott Savage (OF) also return. Zimdars and Braun made second team, while Savage was third team. Rounding out the returning starters are seniors Nick Vogel (SS) and Garret Thomas (OF/P).  Other returning letterwinners for third-year coach Eric Vanden Acker are seniors Zach Lutz (P), George Trawitzki (P) and Bobby Crandall (OF).  "This returning experience should result in a team that has a strong offensive approach at the plate and will be able to score runs against quality pitching," Vanden Acker said. "Defensively, we have nearly all positions returning from a team that was strong up the middle. We will have to find a group of starting pitchers that can step up and keep us in games."  The Orioles went 10-14 and finished in the middle of the pack of the WLT with an 8-8 conference record.  Outside of Thomas, Lutz and Crandall, there are some more arms in a group of 10 newcomers.  "There were valuable varsity innings gained last year by some pitchers, and that experience will hopefully go a long way in determining the success of our team this season," Vanden Acker said.  The newcomers are Jake Weston, Cody Werner, Zach Brewer, Lucas Simon, Dion Miszewski, Trent Birkel, Brock Burg, Nick Balmer, Zach Siebenlist and Nick Bieganski.

Hartford Girls Soccer Opens Season with Victory!
The Hartford Union girls soccer team earned a shutout in its first game of the season with a 2-0 win against Mukwonago on Tuesday The game was originally scheduled to be a home game for the Orioles, but the wintry weather moved the game to Mukwonago.  Maddie Hoxworth and Kayla Okla each scored in the first half for Hartford.  "The goals for the Orioles were well earned tonight," Hartford coach Kevin Martin said. "Kayla played a low ball into Maddie with her back to the goal just outside of the Mukwonago goal box. Hoxworth took the ball to her right, creating just enough space for a shot.  "She hit a low skipping shot in past the Mukwonago  keeper."  Each player also assisted on the other's goal.  "Hoxworth took a corner from the left side. She played a low ball to the near post. Okla made a direct run in and redirected the ball past the Mukwonago keeper on the near post," Martin said. "We worked on this the night before in practice. It is so great to see how the girls are transitioning from practice to game so early in the season."  Martin said each side had its opportunities to score in the first half, but the cold, rainy and windy weather diminished those chances in the second half. The Orioles outshot the Indians, 8-7.  Maddy Sieczkowski made fives saves for the Orioles.
