New: Updated Guidance From the CDC Regarding COVID-19 Symptoms

Greetings!

We wanted to share with you some important updates regarding COVID-19.

Changes to CDC Guidance

Since early on in the virus, the CDC has offered two different strategies for returning employees to work. One was called the “testing strategy,” and the other was called the “symptoms strategy.” As of July 20, the CDC no longer recommends a test-based approach (except for severely immunocompromised individuals), and it has made significant changes to its symptoms-based approach. These guidelines are important to consider in deciding when it is safe for an employee who has experienced symptoms to return to work .

The CDC has updated its symptoms-based approach as follows. An individual experiencing COVID symptoms may end home isolation when:

10 days have passed since symptoms began;
The individual has not experienced a fever for 24 hours (without the use of fever-reducing medication); and
Other symptoms have improved.

The California Department of Health has yet to update its home isolation guidance based on the new CDC changes. It still recommends waiting for 72 hours with no fever and addresses respiratory symptoms specifically, and still provides for a test-based approach. The same is true for Orange County. Los Angeles County has updated its symptoms-based approach to match the CDC’s. We expect that in the coming days the local authorities will update their guidance to follow the CDC’s as they have in the past.

New California COVID-19 Employer Playbook

On July 24, 2020, Governor Newsom released a new 32-page COVID-19 Employer Playbook providing additional guidance on how to safely re-open. The Playbook also reminds employers that they must perform a risk assessment for COVID-19 and have a written worksite-specific COVID-19 Prevention Plan. The Playbook also provides guidance for employers on how to handle COVID-19 cases in the workplace. The Playbook has many other sections including guidance for enforcing face mask requirements, as well as the importance of training and educating employees on the steps to protect themselves and other both at work and outside of work.
