NASW Recommends Ratios for School Social Workers

NASW advocates for ratios in its latest revision (2012) of the NASW Standards for School Social Work Services that reflect the need for an increase in social work positions across the nation in all schools.

NASW National is in partnerships with coalitions that are working to support school social work positions and urges members and the larger social work community to contact their elected officials to advocate for school social work positions in schools.

Ethics of Social Justice Advocacy: From the Micro to the Macro
(5 Ethics CEUs)
April 19, 10am - 4pm in North Brunswick
Presenter: Christine Heer, Esq, LCSW

Now, more than ever perhaps, the call for social workers to engage in social justice activities is front and center. Whether the focus on international atrocities, or local causes such combating racism, sexism, xenophobia, homo- and transphobia, or religious bigotry, or poverty and environmental issues, social justice is a fundamental component of who we are and what we do. This workshop will explore social justice as a function of social work and will engage the participants in discussions of the ethical concerns that may arise out of this work. Topics will include engaging clients in social justice work, disconnects between social justice efforts and employer limitations, how far should a social worker go in standing up for social justice, and guidelines for addressing ethical decision making and dilemmas in social justice work.

NASW Seeks Resolution with CMS Regarding PQRS Negative Payments for LCSWs

In a letter to the head of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), NASW CEO, Angelo McClain, requested a review the 2018 negative payment penalties to clinical social workers to determine if they were inappropriately penalized for using measures beyond their scope of practice.

NASW also submitted comment to CMS on the new Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) which will replace PQRS in 2019, requesting that the standard MIPS formula be reconsidered as the evaluation tool for clinical social workers.
