March Club Update

Hi everyone!

This is my favorite time of the year. The snow is amazing and plentiful, the sun shines a whole lot more than it did in December or January, the days are noticeably longer, and we’re all anticipating the nerves, joy, and adrenaline of championship season. This is where the rubber hits the road!

That being said, we’ve all been at this for A Long Time already this winter. There are some athletes in the program who are totally exceeding their own expectations for the season. And there are kids and families in the program who have tried their hardest and just come up a little short on your aspirations for the season.

That’s okay !!

Did you guys know that Ted Ligety didn’t even make it to the equivalent of U14 Easterns as a U14? (I’m sure there are corollaries on the freeski, freestyle, snowboard side too, so someone please give me some nuggets to use in the future!) Ted was always a little guy, and as a kid he just got beat all the time by the bigger, stronger kids. Happily, for all of us, and for him, he never got too discouraged by his lack of results as a kid, and just kept LOVING skiing. Seriously, the guy loves to ski, more than almost anyone I’ve ever met. He kept working at it, having a blast every time he got to go skiing, and eventually his hard work pays off. It’s way too easy in this Mikaela Shiffrin era to think that if you don’t have wins at every age that you’re doing something wrong, but even within our own National system there are examples of top athletes from all different early trajectories. Ultimately all you can do it keep the excitement high every time you get to the mountain and keep being joyful with your friends and family. If you’re having fun every day, you’ll always be getting better.

If you are where you were hoping to be heading into Champs season, we are SO proud of you! And if you’re not, we’re still so excited, because it means you’re going to turn all that motivation into progress for the rest of this season and into next. There’s a ton of competition ahead of us for the next month, and, as I said above: this is the best time to ski like crazy. Snow, sunshine, fun, daylight. Have fun out there, everyone!

See you soon,
Tory

Meet the Coaches:

I guess you can say that skiing and racing are in my blood because I started skiing at the age of two! Growing up I skied every weekend and all of my school holidays during the winter. When I was old enough I began racing and instantly loved it. During college I decided to stop racing and began to coach at Hunter Mountain in New York, and I have been coaching ever since. I love working with children and I love skiing!

When I'm not skiing you can find me either hiking, running, and spending time with my family. This past fall I completed my second marathon by running the Marine Corp Marathon. This was an amazing race that I hope one day to run again. This spring and summer I am going to return to my favorite distance of the half marathon. Let's see how many I can run!! My son Alex and myself are trying to hike all the 4,000 footers and we plan to hike the Presidential Range this spring/summer. Overall, I love being outside and being active.
