State of Arkansas

The trends continue to be negative in Arkansas's battle with COVID-19 as the state passed two more grim milestones after deaths climbed past 400 on Sunday.

First, Arkansas has climbed past 40,000 cumulative cases of COVID-19 in the last 24 hours. Gov. Asa Hutchinson said that 734 more cases have been detected since yesterday, bringing the state's total to 40,181. As the cumulative total gets higher, the average number of daily cases continues to get higher as well.

"These are high-water numbers," Hutchinson said.

It took just 13 days to add 10,000 more cases since the state hit the 30,000 mark on July 15. Before that, it took the state 16 days (June 29-July 15) to climb from 20,000 cases to 30,000 cases. It took Arkansas 20 days (June 9-June 29) to go from 10,000 cases to 20,000 cases. It took Arkansas 90 days (March 11-June 9) to reach the first 10,000 from the day that the first case was detected in the state.

Arkansas also passed more than 500 current hospitalizations after 12 people were hospitalized in the last 24 hours. The current number of hospitalizations is now 501, of which 110 are on ventilators.

Arkansas reached the first 100 mark of people hospitalized at one time on April 23, which was 43 days after the virus was detected in the state. The state hit 200 hospitalized on June 12, 50 days after it hit 100. Then, 17 days later, on June 29, hospitalizations climbed past 300. From there it accelerated, climbing to 400 on July 12, just 13 days later. From July 12, it took 17 days to reach the current number of hospitalizations at 501. Total hospitalizations, which include those that are currently hospitalized or had been hospitalized, are 2,636.

Today, 20 more deaths were reported by the governor, bringing the state's total to 428.

"These are not good numbers," Hutchinson said after saying today's totals.

Of the 734 cases reported in the last 24 hours, of those 20 are in prisons and 714 are in the community at large.   Of the cases reported today, 55 were in Pulaski County.

As of today, 6,565 cases are considered active with 79 in nursing homes, 225 in correctional facilities and 6,261 in the community.

Arkansas Secretary of Health Jose Romero said explained how the state considers a case to be recovered. He said that to be recovered, someone who has been infected must move past the 10-20 day period of isolation. He said there is no further monitoring after that point.
