St. Michael's Academy
:
We have had a few back-to-back weeks with a lot going on here at school. Our 8th grade students, in particular, have been very busy. Wednesday night, they presented their original poetry at the Poetry Cafe and today they enjoyed a special breakfast with their grandparents. This event was especially touching as it was their final grandparent event at SMA.
This week our 3rd quarter came to a close and report cards will be distributed next Friday before vacation. We're coming down to the home stretch as we start our fourth and final quarter!
Next Tuesday, our 5th grade students will be holding a Creation Fair. A special time has been reserved for 5th grade grandparents at 9:30 a.m. and for 5th grade parents at 12:45 p.m. We look forward to seeing what our 5th grade students have in store! St. Michael's continues to focus on taking care of God's creations in keeping with Pope Francis's encyclical,
Laudato Si'.
Enjoy a restful and nice weekend.
Peace,
Ann E. Dougal
Principal

Celebrating Poetry
April is National Poetry month and the middle level has been preparing since the beginning of March for this special genre of literature.
The middle school curriculum has a strong focus on poetry, a skill introduced in elementary school and then really honed in on by sixth grade. They learn about poetic devices like metaphors, similes, hyperboles, and personification that make poetry different from short stories and novels. They also look at sound devices like alliteration, rhythm, rhyme, and onomatopoeia (sound effects) that give poems a musical quality. We looked and listened to the poetry that is around us every day, like the music that we hear on the way to school. We read poems from classic poets like Edgar Allan Poe and Shakespeare to modern ones like Shel Silverstein and Gary Soto.
The students also wrote their own poetry: haikus, cinquains, diamontes, shape poems, ballads, sonnets, narrative poems, and black-out (or found) poems, along with many others. The sixth and seventh grade students created their own poetry books, consisting of twelve original, illustrated poems. The seventh grade had an additional assignment to research a poet and create a trifold showcasing the poet along with his or her work. The trifolds were the background for the poetry café. The Poetry Café is a culminating activity at the end of eighth grade and a highlight of the English department.
The students enjoy the creativity they can use when they write poetry; sometimes the real aspects of their personalities come out as they write about subjects they care about from their own lives. I think we have some aspiring poets in our school! Even the most reluctant writer can find some part of poetry they enjoy and foster a love of words.

SMA Poets Shine
The 8th grade students did a fantastic job at this year's Poetry Cafe as they performed their self-penned poetry. Powerful words were spoken and various props supported their words as they acted out their poetry on three separate stages complete with spotlights.
Our 7th grade students provided the backdrop with their tri-fold poster boards featuring the poet of their choice. These could be found filling in the spaces between the three stages.
It was a most entertaining evening!

School Mass
Thank you to our 4th grade students for hosting our school Mass today. They did a great job as readers and altar servers.
And thank you to Fr. John Connors from St. Ann's Parish in Chicopee for celebrating Mass with us. His special message of JOY, putting (J) Jesus first, (O) others second, and (Y) yourself last, is a good way to remember how to live our lives.

8th Grade Yummy Breakfast!
The 8th grade students invited their grandparents to St. Michael's today to enjoy a special breakfast. The morning was special since it was their last grandparent event. The highlights of the morning included students reading poetry from the Poetry Cafe and the musical performance by all of the 8th grade students of the song,
Angels Among Us.
A special thank you to Mr. Raymond Syriac, a grandparent to both current and past SMA students. Mr. Syriac shared with the audience his views on the value of Catholic education and the importance of financially supporting it.
Nicely done everyone!
