We present  UF in the Community  to spotlight the positive impact of UF in our region. Across our 16 colleges and numerous institutes and health care facilities, our shared mission includes outreach and service to improve and enrich our community, nation and the world.   

Although UF has students and employees throughout the state, North Central Florida is home to much of our faculty and staff and to our 50,000+ students . Like all area residents,   we seek to create a vibrant, safe, healthy and equitable place in which to live and thrive. Here are some of the ways in which we are enhancing our shared community.​
University of Florida, Nvidia to Deliver ‘Fastest’ Academic Supercomputer in the U.S. by 2021
The University of Florida is poised to run the fastest artificial intelligence-rooted supercomputer in U.S. academia by early 2021 following millions in gifted funding provided by Nvidia, the two announced last Tuesday.

UF welcomes new Senior Vice President for UF IFAS: Dr. J. Scott Angle
Jack Payne  retired from his job as the Senior Vice President of UF/IFAS earlier this month  following a decade of service. After an extensive search process, Dr. J. Scott Angle was selected to take on leadership of the Institute, which includes the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, the statewide Extension Service, and a research arm comprised of nearly 500 tenured and non-tenured faculty.

Measuring the new normal post COVID-19
The unprecedented coronavirus pandemic forced the world to shut down for months. Homes turned into classrooms, work places and restaurants. Now, as America continues to reopen, people are adjusting to a new normal when entering public places and interacting with others.

Eric Jing Du, Ph.D., an associate professor in the Engineering School of Sustainable Infrastructure & Environment (ESSIE) within the University of Florida Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering, plans to examine and predict changes to people’s mobility behavior with a Rapid Response Research (RAPID) Award from the National Science Foundation.

COVID-19’s Sneaky Spread: Half of Transmission is Silent
More than half of COVID-19 transmission is driven by people who show no symptoms, according to new research published on July 6 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The findings could directly influence the design of test-and-trace containment policies that aim to lower the rising numbers of infections in the United States.

Burton Singer, a p rofessor in UF’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Department of Mathematics, and the Emerging Pathogens Institute, contributed to the research and data analysis. Singer has often partnered with the study’s senior author, Alison Galvani of  Y a le University’s School of Public Health.
Teledentistry Helps Address Emergencies
Understanding the need to maintain flexibility and fluidity through the crisis, while still meeting the needs of patients, the University of Florida College of Dentistry worked quickly and efficiently to launch a teledentistry appointment process for patients through Zoom. The team of UF dental faculty provided consultations and care for patients of record at the college’s Gainesville, Naples, Hialeah, St. Petersburg and Wildlight dental centers and, after fine-tuning details, the teledentistry service opened to not only current UFCD patients of record, but also anyone with emergency oral health needs amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

UF veterinarians successfully using new treatment for animals with severe bone loss
A human placenta-derived compound developed by a University of Florida faculty member in the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering is being used with promising results by veterinarians at UF’s College of Veterinary Medicine to treat animals with severe bone loss.

New study finds sea level rise and marsh crabs are reshaping salt marshes
A recent study from the University of Florida found that sea level rise—combined with the burrowing and grazing activities of Sesarma, a native marsh crab—are causing salt marshes across the U.S. South Atlantic Coast to rapidly fracture and reorganize.
