Kansas Press Association convention
Assistant professor Teri Finneman moderated an opening session of the Kansas Press Association convention earlier this month. She asked the panel of journalists questions about the role of journalism in covering government, the impact of fake news rhetoric on the industry, how they do their jobs in a state lacking in open records/government transparency and the role of objectivity in today's journalism. Finneman also taught two sessions on social media engagement and brought four J-School students to the convention.
The article, “Delicate and Durable:  An Analysis of W omen’s Leadership and Media Practices in Vietnam, ” has been accepted for publication in the  International Journal of Media and Cultural Politics . Professor Barbara Barnett , Assistant Professor Hong Vu and Professor Tien Lee authored the paper along with  Hue Dong , a doctoral student at the University of Georgia.

Doctoral student  Michelle Keller  will participate in KU s inaugural 3 Minute Thesis competition today beginning at 5:30 p.m. in Forum B in the Burge Union. She will present on a photo voice project involving women in long-term recovery at a residential substance use disorder (SUD) treatment program in Kansas City. The project was initiated in Professor Joseph Erba 's JOUR 802 Fall 2018 Research Methods class.

KU Edwards Professor of the Practice  Angela Hendershot  and doctoral student and current KU Integrated Marketing Communications Graduate Program Advisory Board Chair  Michelle Keller  will present  Immersive and Experiential Learning in Capstone Courses  at the 43rd Annual Marketing Educators Association (MEA) conference in Phoenix, April 4-6. The presentation provides an overview of changes made to the IMC graduate program s capstone course in light of changing industry needs and adult learning styles.  Dr. Matt Tidwell, director of the IMC graduate program at KU Edwards Campus, was also a significant contributor to the revised course.

Doctoral student  Michelle Keller  will participate in a poster presentation as part of the KU Professionals for Inclusion and Social Justice Graduate Student Research Conference on Feb, 28, 2019, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Kansas Union. Her session is from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
Experimental Research Club meeting this week
The Experimental Research Club will meet Thursday, Feb. 21, at 5 p.m. in Room 116, Stauffer-Flint Hall. The club is open to all faculty, graduate and undergraduate students interested in experimental research.

Students discuss social media with 'Bachelor' stars
Former Bachelor Nation TV show contestants Jade and Tanner Tolbert  guest lectured via video call in Assistant Professor Teri Finneman s social media class last week. The couple talked about being Instagram influencers.
Associate Professor Yvonnes Chen s Campaigns students met with their client, Azadeh Amani-Taleshi , founder of  Pishkesh Market, on Jan. 31. Pishkesh Market sells the first fair trade saffron certified by Fair Trade USA. Saffron is the most expensive spice in the world and can be worth more per ounce than gold. Pishkesh Market ensures rigorous social and economic standards to empower producers and the communities behind the saffron products. 
Chen s campaigns students also welcomed Michelle Keller (pictured), Vice President of Community Engagement, Development and Outreach at Swope Health Services, to class on Jan. 24. In her 30-minute presentation, Keller introduced students to Swope Health Services branding campaign informed by students research findings and strategy. She also shared tips to help students build a solid client-student relationship.
On Jan. 22,  Associate Professor Yvonnes Chen welcomed Associate Professor of Communication Studies Jeffery Hall to her College Teaching class, a graduate seminar that focuses on evidence-based teaching practices. In his 45-minute talk, Hall talked about how to motivate students in classes that they have to take. He provided his course transformation example and discussed what professors can do to remove the unnecessary materials while focusing on the essential questions and strong alignment between course instructions and assignments.
Katich Creativity Award nominations
Nominations are now open for the John Katich Award for Creativity. The Katich award goes to a tenure-track or tenured faculty member who has demonstrated creativity in teaching, research, service or a combination of these areas. Deliver nominations materials to Associate Professor Max Utsler by 5 p.m. March 22. The award will be presented at the last faculty meeting of the year on May 10. Learn more here.

Sportswriter Kavitha Davidson to speak next week
Sportswriter Kavitha Davidson will deliver the keynote at “The Power of Sport: A Conversation on Business, Race and Sports” event at 6 p.m. Feb. 21 in the Burge Union. Davidson has been a feature writer and columnist for espnW, ESPN the Magazine and is writing a book on sports fandom. She previously wrote a daily sports column for Bloomberg with a heavy focus on the intersection of sports and business, race, gender and culture. Learn more here. Bobkowski to give annual Budig lecture
Associate Professor Peter Bobkowski will present “Telling Stories: How I Learned to Write and Teach Writing” at 4 p.m. March 5 in Watson 3 West in Watson Library. Bobkowski is the recipient of the 2018-2019 Gretchen and Gene Budig Teaching Professorship of Writing. Read the KU News story.

J-School Career Fair is March 7
Kansas City Business Journal to interview students next week
An editor from The Kansas City Business Journal will be on campus, Thursday, Feb. 28, to interview students for a summer internship. Seniors for 2019-2020 and 2019 graduates are encouraged to apply. Submit resume and three story clips to Steve Rottinghaus , career and outreach coordinator at steve_rottinghaus@ku.edu by 5 p.m., Friday, Feb. 22. Resumes and clips will be forwarded to the Kansas City Business Journal in advance of on-campus interviews at Stauffer-Flint Hall. The general assignment experience will prepare interns for life in a news gathering operation that carefully balances online and print, paid and free content. Early in the internship, interns will be assigned stories to cover, such as meeting coverage and reporting from news releases. As the internship progresses, the interns will learn to start generating story ideas on their own and tackle profiles for special sections and online, perhaps even a small project.
Contests, Awards and Scholarships
The Missouri Broadcasters Association Radio Talent Institute is accepting applications until March 1. The 10-day session July 29-Aug. 7 at Northwest Missouri State in Maryville, Missouri, is $395. Limited scholarships are available. Learn more and apply here.
The Elizabeth Miller Watkins Memorial Scholarship is open to women who are enrolled as full-time undergraduate students at KU with at least a 3.0 GPA. Awards of $2,000 or more will be based on application materials, including essay and financial need. Deadline is March 1. Learn more here.
The 2019 Diversity and Inclusion Action Group Applied Research Award application period is now open. Faculty and doctoral candidates are invited to apply for the award, which provides $5,000 toward the development and execution of a research project. Deadline for submission of proposals is March 15. Diversity & You: The J-School is holding a competition for students to submit photos and videos representing the subject diversity and you. Entrants have a wide latitude to express their views as it affects them and others. First-place winner will receive $400; second place is $200; third place is $100. Deadline is Friday, March 8.
