Lehigh Carbon Community College
was recently awarded an $80,000 grant that will be used to create a Production Technician Pre-Apprenticeship Program that will prepare students for advanced manufacturing apprenticeship opportunities.
Two state Department of Labor & Industry officials, Secretary Jerry Oleksiak and Deputy Secretary for Workforce Development Eileen Cipriani, visited
Lehigh Carbon Community College
to announce the grant. They toured the college's advanced manufacturing laboratory and spoke with college faculty, staff and students about the importance of manufacturing education in the Lehigh Valley.

) has been awarded this important pre-apprenticeship grant," said Dr. Ann D. Bieber, president of Lehigh Carbon Community College. "The funding will allow us to provide tuition and instructional materials for 30 students, which will prepare them for employment or apprenticeships in the Lehigh Valley's growing manufacturing industry."
Lehigh Carbon Community College
partners with companies such as Ocean Spray, Mack Trucks, and B. Braun to provide the related technical instruction for their programs.
During the next two years, students from the Medical Assisting Certificate Program at
HACC, Central Pennsylvania's Community College
, will be able to apply for a $4,000 scholarship established by UPMC Pinnacle.
The donation to the
HACC Foundation
allows for up to 20 UMPC Pinnacle Workforce Development scholarships per academic year. Students can use the funds for tuition, fees, books, and/or program expenses.
To be eligible for the scholarship, students must be enrolled in the college's Medical Assisting Certificate Program and participate in a mandatory career preparation workshop before completing the program.
Westmoreland County Community College recently received a $50,000 grant to improve and expand apprenticeship programs.
The award was part of $480,000 in state grants that will support apprentice-related programs.
Grants were awarded by the state Department of Labor & Industry through Local Workforce Development Boards. A total of $3.5 million was distributed around Pennsylvania.
A transfer and articulation agreement signed between leaders of
Northampton Community College and Kutztown University will help students in
NCC
's English as Second Language program be admitted to KU.
"As a college of the community, we've been committed to helping English as Second Language students work toward proficiency in reading, writing and speaking skills. This agreement significantly expands on our work with ESL students by providing to them seamless transition to a parallel program at Kutztown," said Dr. Mark Erickson, president of
NCC
. "What makes me happiest is that this agreement further expands access to higher education options, which is the core of our mission at Northampton."
This is the fourth articulation agreement between the two institutions. Successful and convenient agreements for students studying early childhood education, middle level education, and sports management are already established.
