This Sunday at Christ Church
Alonzo Pruitt to Preach and Lead Faith & Practice
Alonzo Pruitt is a retired Episcopal priest serving with Christopher on the St. Leonard's Board.  He is a Chicago native and a graduate of Seabury Western and also has an advanced degree in social work. In addition to serving churches in Richmond, VA, Brooklyn, and Chicago,  Alonzo completed his full time ministry as a Lt. Col in the Army Reserve, serving for twelve years Chief of Chaplains. Most recently, he was the chaplain of the second largest state prison in Richmond, VA and currently serves as the Vicar at St. Andrew's Chapel at St. Leonard's. His work with the incarcerated has garnered widespread attention.  He credits much of his ministry to becoming sober 23 years ago.  "I feel very fortunate to have escaped the mean streets and, a day at a time, be winning the battle of addiction," Pruitt says.
"I think being open about my brokenness invites people to see that I'm not reaching down to them, I'm reaching across."
Parish News
Christ Church is Debt-Free!!!
Tuesday night at our Fall Harvest Dinner, announced that we have fully paid off our loan on the Schroeder Building.  In 2006, we took out a $1.1 million dollar loan to renovate the building for our commercial tenants and for Rummage support.  Over time, through various means, we have chipped away at the principal.  Six weeks ago, with a remaining balance of $188,000, donors came forward and offered to give us $100,000 if we could raise the additional $88,000.  Thanks to a generous group of parishioners, we met our challenge goal and have now reduced our outstanding debt to zero!!  Deepest thanks to our generous donors through the years who have made this possible.  We are now able to eliminate our line item for interest expense in our operating budget, a savings in 2019 of $12,500.  Thanks be to God!!!
Starting This Sunday
 Desperately Seeking Volunteers
Christ Church Hosts Families
from Family Promise October 21-28
THIS SUNDAY , October 21, Christ Church will welcome 3-4 families from Family Promise, who will be our overnight guests at Church House all of next week.  We still need many volunteers to help us provide meals, activities, and hospitality while they are here.

Specifically, we are looking for:
  • 5-6 people for both setup and cleanup -- Sunday morning before church on 10/21 and 10/28.
  • 5 Evening Hosts -- to welcome our guests each evening and share a meal with them.
  • 6 Overnight Hosts -- to stay overnight (in your own room).
  • Saturday Breakfast Hosts -- to cook and serve a hot breakfast.
  • Saturday Dinner Hosts -- to cook and serve dinner.
  • 4 Activity Hosts -- to provide activities for the children.
  • 4 Youth Hosts -- to welcome our youth guests, share a meal with them and help entertain them.
This is an inspiring, hands-on opportunity for us to make a difference to these families by keeping them together while they get back on their feet. Please visit the Signup Genius here for more details. Or better yet -- signup!

God Wants More Than a Coffee Cup and a Dinner Party!
Please join us on Sunday, October 28 for Faith and Practice.  The 2040 Committee, as part of our efforts to consider leading thought leaders, is hosting Beth Newman to discuss hospitality in relation to our faith and worship.  Beth is a Professor of Theology and Ethics at the Baptist Theological Seminary in Richmond, VA.  Her book, Untamed Hospitality - Welcoming God and Other Strangers was the inspiration for inviting her.  The book is a cultural and theological look at hospitality, not as a superficial commodity that can be bought to throw a dinner party, but within God's story, as displayed most fully in Jesus Christ.

This is guaranteed to be a thought-provoking discussion which we hope you all can join and benefit from. Beth will be visiting our parish for a few days. If you have an interest in spending time with her please feel free to reach out to Molly Hufton or Peter Macey.
