April is here and spring is right around the corner!

We would like to thank everyone who attended our 10th Annual Egg Hunt. Hop on over here to view photos from the event. Everyone had an "eggcellent" time.

Looking for an activity next weekend? Come join us for some inflatable fun on Saturday, April 14th from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm. We will have bounce house options available for children. This program is FREE for members of all ages. Children 8 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

Liberty is proud to be your home away from home, and to be part of your extended family. With members like you, we have been able to provide an environment that fosters health and wellness throughout our local community. Please know that you are always appreciated and we thank you for allowing us to serve you.

In good health,

It's quality not quantity when it comes to weight loss
From the desk of Susan Cutshaw, M.S.

The standard recommendation for weight loss typically emphasizes some form of dietary record keeping and calorie counting. However, a recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) may be changing that.

In the study, participants were placed in either a low carbohydrate or low fat diet group. Both groups experienced significant weight loss over a 12-month period. Neither group limited portion sizes or counted calories. Instead, the weight loss appears to be the result of reducing added sugars, refined grains, and processed foods; while increasing vegetables, fruits, and whole foods such as nuts and legumes.

Several studies have found that reducing processed foods and moving toward a more plant-based diet not only negates the necessity of counting calories in order to lose body fat, but also significantly improves overall cholesterol, body mass index (BMI), and other health risk factors.

In other words, research strongly supports the idea that the key to weight loss and weight management is diet quality, not quantity. According to Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian, a cardiologist and Dean of the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University, health care providers should encourage patients to move away from obsessing over calories. Avoiding processed foods made with added sugars and refined starches, like sugary beverages and bagels, will provide better and sustainable long term results.
