At age 85, Dick Landfield is heading south of the border to race the Baja Peninsula one more time, with his long time friend and fellow Hall of Famer, Bill Savage, by his side. The two will compete in the 2018 NORRA Mexican 1000, billed (and justifiably so) as, "The Happiest Race on Earth." With a name like Team O.L.D., you know these two are going to have a great time.

2018 is a landmark year for Dick, who is celebrating a remarkable 50 years in off-road racing. Dick began his off-road racing career driving a Ford Bronco with Irv Hanks in the 1968 NORRA Baja 500.

In 1972, Dick was one of the founding members of the "First Association of Independent Racers" (F.A.I.R.)
In 1974 he was a part of the introduction of the first mini-truck, a Ford Courier, to the off-road racing scene. He then identified and developed the market for "prerunner" trucks that looked like those of well known racers.

In 1991, Dick developed the idea for the sport's first multi-truck team, the Rough Riders. Many future Hall of Famers were Rough Riders, including Rob MacCachren, David Ashley, Manny Esquerra, and Johnny Johnson.
The Ford Rough Riders had
consistent paint scheme on all the vehicles, and Dick had the drivers wear matching drivers' suits and dressed the pit crews in identical crew uniforms. The impact was unprecedented.

Also a successful businessman, Dick's southern California car dealership, Fairway Ford, was recently honored by Ford Motor Company with a 50-year award.

Dick has used the knowledge and influence that he earned from business and racing to help drivers, teams, promoters, sponsors and organizations at every level, achieve their goals and promote the sport.

In recognition of his many contributions to the sport of off-road, Dick was inducted in the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2007.

College student Bill Savage opened TMAG welding in 1972. After spectating the Baja 1000 in 1974, he was hooked. It took him several years, between finishing college and managing his busy shop, before his first car was ready to race. Bill entered the 1979 Baja 1000, winning his class.

Among his many business ventures, Bill partnered with Todd Clement and started Wide Open Baja, a tour company that would give non-racers the Baja experience. The prototype cars were built at TMAG, another 42 cars were built at Todd's Horsepower Ranch in Baja.

In subsequent years, Bill relocated his company and changed the name to SPD Products. Speed and Performance by Design (SPD) built off-road trucks that went on to win many races, including the Baja 500 and Baja 1000. It was then that NASA came calling, inviting Bill to attend a meeting with NASA engineers.
SPD Designs built three Lunar Rovers, and went on to build two Mars Rovers.
Bill Savage helped design many out of this world vehicles.

Throughout his career as an off-road innovator, Bill has always circled back to his interest in keeping racers safe. He has written the rule books for many major off-road organizations for the past 37 years. He has spent countless hours organizing teams to manage pre- and post-race tech inspections, a thankless and controversial job to say the least.

In recognition of his innovation and safety advances in the sport of off-road, Bill was inducted in the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2017.
