Union County ELC Meeting - December 21 featuring
Senate President Stephen Sweeney
Third Legislative District

Friday, December 21
8:30 - 10:30 AM
Holiday Inn, Clark
36 Valley Road
Clark, NJ 07066

Senator Stephen Sweeney has served as President of the New Jersey Senate since 2010. He has been a leader on the most important state issues, passing laws to increase the minimum wage, allowing Paid Family Leave, establishing marriage equality, setting a two-percent cap on annual property tax increases, and promoting equal educational opportunity through the Dream Act.

Senator Sweeney has fought to create jobs and economic opportunity for everyone. He sponsored bills to provide economic incentives for job creation, to create new jobs and job training for the unemployed, and to restore tax cuts for the working poor. Recognizing the importance of transportation infrastructure to the state's economy, he has been a leader on renewing funding for the Transportation Trust Fund. He continues to work to make college more affordable and reduce college debt for New Jersey's students and middle-class families.

Senator Sweeney has taken a leading role in promoting property tax relief and making government operate more effectively and more efficiently. He also helped build schools for special needs children, established parks for children with disabilities and sponsored the creation of a statewide registry of offenders who abused individuals with developmental disabilities.

In 2018, Senate President Sweeney established a bipartisan panel of legislators and economic experts to develop reforms that address the state's most challenging fiscal problems. The Economic and Fiscal Policy Workgroup issued a series of far-reaching recommendations that will help to avert crisis conditions, maintain fiscal stability, reduce the costs of government and allow the state to support vital needs and services.

Senator Sweeney has represented the Third Legislative District since 2002.

The City of Elizabeth:
The Future of our Waterways is in Your Hands

Did you know that the City of Elizabeth, like many older urban areas, has a Combined Sewer System (CSS) that discharges into local waters during heavy rainfall?

Combined Sewer Systems are typically located in older urban areas and were constructed to provide for the transportation of sanitary sewage, industrial discharges and stormwater within the same pipe. The combined sewer system in the City of Elizabeth is designed to transport all sewage flows and some wet weather flows for treatment at the Joint Meeting of Essex & Union Counties (JMEUC) Wastewater Treatment Plant. The system is also designed to discharge excess flows from the Combined Sewer System owned and operated by the municipality as a Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) discharge into the adjacent waterways. The City of Elizabeth has 29 combined sewer outfalls, which discharge to the Elizabeth River, Arthur Kill and Newark Bay. The transport and treatment systems owned and operated by the City of Elizabeth and JMEUC have limited capacity and if CSSs were not permitted to overflow, the community would flood. The City of Elizabeth is working with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to reduce the number of CSO events that take place every year to improve water quality in Elizabeth's receiving streams.

What can you do to help? SLOW the FLOW

By taking a few simple and inexpensive steps, such as using rain barrels and planting rain gardens, you can hold some of the rainwater on your property during the storm. The water you retain can be used on your property for watering plants or released to the sewer system gradually during dry weather.

Impaired Driving Enforcement Crackdown to be Conducted Locally as Part of Statewide Year End Campaign

ELIZABETH, NJ - Law enforcement officials from the Elizabeth Police Department will be cracking down on drivers impaired by alcohol or drugs as part of the annual end of year "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" statewide campaign. Beginning December 7, 2018 and continuing through January 1, 2019, local and state law enforcement officials will conduct saturation patrols and sobriety checkpoints looking for motorists who may be driving while intoxicated.

The national "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" effort endeavors to raise awareness about the dangers of impaired driving through a combination of high-visibility enforcement and public education. "New Jersey logged nearly 38,000 car crashes involving alcohol, resulting in more than 700 fatalities," said Sgt. Clancy. "This program that can save lives during a time of the year when impaired driving traditionally increases by nearly 10 percent."

Last year, 20% of all motor vehicle fatalities in New Jersey were alcohol-related. Nationally, more than 10,000 people die each year in drunk driving crashes. The societal cost associated with these crashes is estimated to be $37 billion annually.

Law enforcement agencies participating in the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over 2018 Year End Holiday Crackdown offer the following advice for the holiday season:
  • Take mass transit, a taxicab, or ask a sober friend to drive you home.
  • Spend the night where the activity or party is held.
  • If you see an impaired driver on the road, contact law enforcement. Your actions may save someone's life, and inaction could cost a life.
  • Always buckle-up, every ride. It's your best defense against an impaired driver.
  • If you are intoxicated and traveling on foot, the safest way to get home is to take a cab or have a sober friend or family member drive or escort you to your doorstep.
  • Be responsible. If someone you know is drinking, do not let that person get behind the wheel.
Please be aware of a potential scam!!!

The Greater Elizabeth Chamber of Commerce Office has been made aware of a person contacting some of our members with the pretense that he is soliciting advertising on T-Shirts on behalf of "Elizabeth HS".

He claims to have gotten a membership list from the "Elizabeth Chamber". This is untrue. We only share our membership list with our members.
Furthermore, we have verified with the Athletic Director of Elizabeth and he confirms that no company has been contracted to solicit for the sports teams in the district.

Athletic Director Ben Candelino says he has filed a reported with the Board of Education's Legal Department.

Please proceed with caution if you have received any phone calls or emails soliciting Advertising to support the 2018-2019 School Year from:

Meet New Member: Union Dermatology & Skin Cancer Center

Santiago Centurion is the Medical Director and a board-certified dermatologist, dermatopathologist, and Mohs surgeon. "We are so excited to come to Union," he said. "I grew up in the area and this is a dream come true. It's great coming back."

Dr. Centurion specializes in the treatment and evaluation of skin cancer. He has served as Chief of Dermatologic Surgery at the East Orange Veterans Hospital and Director of Dermatologic Surgery at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He taught the art of skin cancer surgery to medical fellows, residents and students. Dr. Centurion has performed several thousand Mohs, dermatologic and laser surgeries and has also published numerous scientific papers as well as contributed to scores of dermatology textbooks.

"This new practice expands the quality of care we deliver," said Advanced Practice Nurse Cristina Centurion. "Our patients are number one and we treat them like family. We value our patients and put their well-being first."

"One of our specialties here at Union Dermatology is Mohs micrographic surgery," continued Cristina Centurion. "It's a specialty within dermatology. It's a specialized surgery to remove skin cancer and Dr. Centurion is extremely proficient in the procedure." Mohs Micrographic Surgery, also known as chemosurgery, is a procedure designed to excise entire lesions of skin cancer utilizing frozen section histology. It is most effective in removing primary basal cell carcinomas, but is also used for removing squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma-in-situ.

With other locations in Freehold and Old Bridge, the Union Dermatology & Skin Cancer Center focuses on clinical dermatology, cosmetic dermatology, laser procedures, and skin cancer surgery.

Clinical dermatology care includes acne and eczema treatment, mole removal, psoriasis treatment, seborrhea/seborrheic dermatitis treatment, skin cancer treatment, skin infections and wort removal.

Forms of cosmetic dermatology include CoolSculpting, cosmetic BOTOX, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, scan revision, treatment of acne scarring, PRP, and YAG laser. "We are excited to add a new practice to our other offices," said Physician Assistant Bhakti Kanani.

"Quality is what we focus on," added Kanani. "We don't compromise. This is a great team."

"The skin is the largest organ of the body," added Cristina Centurion. "The American Academy of Dermatology recommends a once yearly screening, especially with skin cancer on the rise. Melanoma does not respect age."

Union Dermatology & Skin Cancer Center's mission is to enhance the health and well-being of patients by delivering superior healthcare. The practice treats both adult and pediatric patients.

Extra Supermarket takes the Extra Step!
Chamber member Mitchel Lopez, owner of Extra Supermarket, which recently opened on West Grand Street in Elizabeth, is "all smiles" as he happily donates Thanksgiving turkeys to The Leaguers, a non-profit organization in Elizabeth offering childcare services to infants and toddlers and preschool aged children. "I just wanted to help some of the people in the community", said Mitchel, "it's the right thing to do!" Here's Mitchel (center) pictured with Wendy Garcia and Nicodem Francois from The Leaguers.

Extra Supermarket also donated turkeys to Jefferson Park Ministries, Inc. an organization in Elizabeth, whose mission is to serve and enhance the quality of life for immigrant families and youth and Josephine's Place, a storefront drop-in space in Elizabeth dedicated to women for the purpose of empowerment.

Thanks Mitchel and Extra Supermarket for reaching out to those in need and making a difference!
