OUTDOOR EDUCATION PROGRAM
LEARNING FROM MARCH TRIPS AND PREPARING FOR END-OF-YEAR EXPEDITIONS
In eight weeks, we will be leaving on the end-of-the-year trips. As you and your child dries, cleans and puts away gear from the March trip, here are a few things to keep in mind for rain readiness.

1. Rain pants and jackets - some students did not have one or the other. Both are required

2. Rain Fly - A few tents used on the March trips had inadequate rainflies. A good rain fly should be long enough to cover the walls of the tents, including doorways.  Shorter rainflies allow water to come through the walls of the tent and puddle inside. All tents sold at SBMS have adequate rainflies.

3. Ground Cloth/Cover - A ground cloth/cover keeps moisture from seeping from the ground into the tent and protects the floor of the tent from abrasive ground like rocks and sand. Be sure the ground cloth fits the footprint of the tent. One that is too large will funnel water under the tent and one that is too small will allow moisture to wick into the tent.

4. Tent stakes -  Tent stakes are the short aluminum stakes that anchor the tent body, rain fly, and guy-lines to the ground. Some students did not have enough tent stakes. Be sure you provide the right number of stakes plus a couple extra.

5. Guy-lines - The guy-lines are cords that pull the rain fly away from the tent body so water will flow away from the tent.  To make a tent "waterproof," the fly and guy-lines must be set up properly. Not all tents had guy-lines and some guy-lines came back in lost and found.  Be sure your child's tent has guy-lines attached and they know how to adjust them.

6. Practice Tent Set Up Before Each Trip - This is good to do before every trip so that each tent partner knows how to set up the tent and can make sure they have all the parts.

PARENT ASSOCIATION NEWS
Dear Parents,

I hope you all had a wonderful Spring Break relaxing with family and friends.

Thank you to those who were able to come out for the Parent Cocktail Party at Casa Blanca Restaurant, it was a great turn out and a fun time had by all.  It's always nice to meet new people and connect with old friends over relaxed surroundings and a drink or two.

There is another great way to connect with SBMS parents and friends by supporting the school and purchasing your auction tickets today!  If you can't make the event, maybe you want to buy a ticket for a teacher to enjoy a night out?
