Prepare for Winter Weather School Notifications
With winter weather upon us, families should prepare for winter school closing notifications. In order to receive these announcements quickly, it is important for families to have correct contact information in their students' PowerSchool accounts. This will allow the District's automated messaging system to quickly reach you--via phone, email, and text--with emergency weather information.

To Receive Weather/Emergency Calls, Text Messages, and Emails
Log in to your PowerSchool account and Under  "Alerting" click on  "SwiftReach SwiftK12" in the top left corner. 

On the screen that opens, click on  "Contact Information" to make sure your phone numbers and email address is correct. Then check your  "Alert Preferences" to make sure each category is checked for what you wish to receive under "General Information."  Weather-related closures are sent under the "General Information" category. 

Social Media & Website 
Families can follow the District on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to receive instant weather notifications. Follow on Twitter and Instagram at @FPSchools 

The district will also update its website, wwww.fairviewparkschools.org with school closing information.

Local Television
FPCS will notify local TV stations WKYC (NBC), WEWS (ABC), WOIO (CBS) and Fox8 with school closing information.

Tips on Staying Healthy and Symptoms to Watch for During Flu Season
It's flu season! The Fairview Park City Schools nurses offer our families these tips on staying healthy and symptoms to look for during flu season. 
 
What are Symptoms of Flu ?
  • Fever-may be high and last 3-4 days
  • Headache
  • Aches and pains
  • Fatigue and weakness-may last 2-3 weeks
  • Exhaustion
  • Cough/chest discomfort is common
  • Sore throat-sometimes
  • Stomach upset-sometimes
I Think I May Have the Flu-Now What??
  • Go home!
  • Stay home until you are fever free for 24 hours.
  • Treat your symptoms - fluids, medication to treat fever and headache, rest
How Can I Minimize the Possibility that I Get the Flu?
  • Wash your hands often using soap and water or alcohol-based hand rub.
  • Do not share personal items like drinks, food or utensils.
  • Cover your cough/sneezes with tissues or arm when tissues not available. Dispose of used tissues in trash and wash your hands.
  • Stay away from people who are sick.
  • Get the flu vaccination yearly

French 2 just finished reading their first novel (Brandon Brown Veut un Chien by Carol Gaab) COMPLETELY in French. Quite an accomplishment!

The HS Book Discussion Group met on Thursday, Dec. 13 to discuss Fake ID. Our next book for January is The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. Extra books are available in the library if you care to join our group for this popular, timely book that was recently in theaters. We will meet Thursday, Jan. 10 during L1 at 9:50 AM in the library to discuss the book.

NHS wrapped up their holiday volunteering Monday night at Browns Stadium. Members helped unload trucks filled with Christmas trees, hundreds of teddy bears and auction/raffle items. The kids did an amazing job and event organizers continually complimented them on their work ethic, personalities and their desire to help. Just another reason I love working with these kids.
 
On a side note, the senior English classes continue to do well on their implementation of Summit learning. Overall, students are seeing success and are continuing to work hard toward the end of the second quarter.

As the holiday season is approaching, I just wanted to reflect on a few things to bring joy to your family.

1) If there is one thing that students, parents and teachers learned from watching the  Angst documentary... Talk to your kids! Let them know you are there for them! Please, if you need any resources,  click here. 

2) The link below is the eulogy that George W. Bush gave regarding his father along with an article that helps remind us that... 

  In the eulogy, George W didn't mention once that his parents made sure he had organic food his whole life, or had Pinterest worthy birthday parties, or the perfect monogrammed matching outfits with his siblings. He didn't mention that his parents made sure their week was planned with playdates and millions of extracurricular activities.  He reflected over and over again about how much his dad loved and was dedicated to his mother.

I worry that we get so caught up in the minor things that we forget the major thing.... which is teaching our kids what unconditional love and loyalty looks like.
