Message from the Minister
Dear Spiritual Community,
It's the day after "Snowmageddon 2019," or as native Wisconsinites call it, "winter." In 35 years of ministry I've never had to cancel a Sunday service because of the weather, and that includes decades in the Midwest, albeit the Lower Midwest. There was one Christmas Eve when just about every church in Cincinnati had canceled candlelighting services, but not pig-headed me. I got out our plowing service out and a crew of volunteers to help chip away what the city plows did to the entrances of our parking lot. At seven o'clock that night we had about fifty people attend the service. Our soloist couldn't make it, so I subbed for them. You know how much I like to sing. I was rather proud of myself that we were open that night! So, yesterday was a first for me. I've had many firsts since moving to Eau Claire - cheese curds, Packers game, "Spotted Cow" on tap, and not being surprised about the accuracy of weather forecasts.
All this past Saturday afternoon my EC colleagues and I held an impromptu online e-mail conference about what to do. Being new to town, I was very open to their wisdom. As we approached 5:00 p.m. one of them said he was canceling, and the rest of us fell like dominoes. We officially canceled at 6:35 p.m. Remember, I'm a little bit stubborn about giving up!
In Unity, we teach "going with the flow," and what I've learned in my seven months in Eau Claire is that being flexible with one's schedule is a useful attribute. When it's clear that a plan B is needed it is always best to surrender to the situation. Let us learn to assess those situations where an alternative is the best course of action. We often say, "this, or something better, God." The something better is the best course of action, always.
Donna and I will be away on Sunday, March 3, thawing out on the West Coast visiting with family and friends. We will see everybody the following Sunday. Maybe by then all the snow will have melted away. One can hope!
Blessings,
Alden
