Letter from the Executive Director
Literacy Source's new Executive Director Eileen Aparis with ESOL Instructor Ewa Krawczyk
Dear Literacy Source Supporters,

I am thrilled to be part of the team at Literacy Source that is committed to education, equity, and opportunity for all.

My commitment to social development and inclusion comes from my own lived experience coming to this country as an immigrant. I was determined to learn and have access to every opportunity. It has resulted in working with cross-sector organizations from non-profits, private, and public organizations to help improve the lives of individuals, families, and communities. I'm excited to go on this journey with you to provide quality adult basic education from GED preparation, digital literacy programs, ESOL and conversation classes, citizenship classes, naturalization assistance, democracy and inclusion programs, and Ready to Work. These programs and services are so vital to our students and the community.

Thank you all for your warm welcome and support. Let's keep building together!

With Service and Gratitude,

Eileen Aparis

Kevin McGuire

Kevin is a GED student at Literacy Source who started studying here last spring. He was born and raised in Seattle and has settled in Lake City where he also works, running the winter shelter co-hosted by the Mennonite Church, which shares our courtyard.

He shared this about his job: "Working in a shelter and for a community organization has been a dream job for me. When I walked away from a trade job after 20 years, I had no idea what I would do. I'm grateful I've found an opportunity to do what I love. I've been volunteering in the community my whole adult life and now I get to do it for a living. Going back to school was the springboard for that opportunity."

Coming to Literacy Source, Kevin began studying math in the GED lab, which, he reports, will be the most challenging part of the GED. His immediate goal is to complete his GED, and then follow the paths that open from that, whatever they may be. He's interested in staying in school, and will always continue his community work as well.

As a Seattle-native he has an unshakeable love for the city, despite the March rain and seasonal depression. He says he loves the nature here most, and enjoys going on adventures whenever he can. Usually when he has time off, though, he loves to play golf, binge watch TV, or do whatever his daughter wants to do.

Kevin has done impressive work with the shelter and will continue to do amazing things. We're so glad he's also a student at Literacy Source!

Volunteer Spotlight

Alan Bryce

This month we are pleased to highlight Alan Bryce, who volunteers at our Talk Time class at the Beacon Hill Library. Alan just celebrated his one year of service volunteering at Literacy Source! We are thrilled to have Alan as part of the team at Beacon Hill. Please take the time to read his spotlight, it is an entertaining perspective on Alan's time volunteering here and his interesting life experiences. He has contributed much more to students' lives than being a Talk Time volunteer!

Here is what Sarah McCormick, our Talk Time Coordinator, says about working with Alan:

"Alan came to Talk Time with an open and joyful spirit. His interactions with the participants show he truly loves the program. Not only has he taught us so many things about his passions, but he embraces the opportunity to learn more about others' cultures, countries, and languages each week. Alan brings a new and unique perspective to the sessions. He has opened up the world of local theater and arts to our participants. Talk Timers have been able to attend plays, meet cast members and directors, and visit the Seattle Art Museum. His generosity is endless and his enthusiasm is contagious. We are so lucky to have Alan at Beacon Hill!"

Snow Closure Policy
With so many school closures and delayed starts due to the snow in the past few weeks, we thought we'd remind everyone of our snow day policy. Literacy Source follows the Seattle Public Schools (SPS) closure schedule when there are severe weather conditions. Therefore, if SPS has a school closure or late start, Literacy Source will too. It's also a good idea to check our website or Facebook page for updates, which will be posted by 7 am the day of the closure or delay. We hope this helps clarify things!

Staff Changes
Marisa Parshotam

Today is Marisa's last official day as our AmeriCorps VISTA service member.

Marisa has been an integral staff member at Literacy Source, choosing to serve as an AmeriCorps VISTA with Literacy Source for two years. As the Student Success Coordinator, she has undertaken a variety of projects including streamlining the library system that students and volunteers use to check out books, leading and organizing focus groups for students to give meaningful feedback about their experience at Literacy Source, and deepening our roots in Lake City with effective outreach and building partnerships with local and community organizations.

Fortunately for us, she will be continuing on with Literacy Source through June in a new part time capacity, coordinating the Democracy Voucher Program that we are collaborating on with Lake City Collective.

Thank you for everything you've done to make Literacy Source a more equitable, student-centered place, Marisa! Students, staff, and volunteers alike look forward to your continued presence at Literacy Source!
