 LEGISLATIVE ACTION UPDATE
www-abstract-globe.jpg
Bill on Net Neutrality Could Be Passed in Last Days of Legislative Session

HB 1654, a bill that would require internet service providers to give their customers an opt-in choice before using their personal information, has passed a third reader in the House of Delegates and is scheduled for a final House vote this week, just ahead of the end of the current legislative session Monday at midnight. The Chamber is opposed to the legislation as written because state-by-state regulation of the internet will harm consumers and businesses by discouraging investment in broadband infrastructure and new technologies in Maryland that are critical to a new and vital economy. We believe there should instead be a comprehensive, common-sense approach at the federal level to address these issues and penned a letter to Delegate Derrick Davis, Chair of the Economic Matters Committee at the start of the session letting him know of our opposition to the legislation.
