Describing the experience as "life-changing," a team from the School of Nursing & Health Studies led a workshop for local midwives and health care workers in Liberia, a country traumatized by a protracted civil war and the Ebola epidemic.

At their annual awards ceremony, Georgetown Women in Medicine (GWIM) recognized several members for their achievements as leaders, mentors and faculty members.

Since the late Robert S. Ledley, DDS, developed the first full-body CT scanner in the 1970s, GUMC has led the field of imaging science, paving the way for the recently established Center for Translational Imaging.

Dozens Celebrate Founder of Mary's Center on Its 30th Anniversary
Founded by Maria S. Gomez (NHS'77), MPH, RN, in a basement in Washington, D.C., Mary's Center has grown into a multi-site organization serving more than 50,000 women, men and children every year.
Sharing their stories, concerns and questions, D.C. residents participated in a community forum on the relationship between breast cancer and the environment, hosted by Georgetown Lombardi.

In celebration of Human Rights Day on December 10,  Larry Gostin, JD, director of the O'Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law and professor of medicine at the School of Medicine, reflects on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

 




Members of the Georgetown University community gathered on Saturday, December 1 to celebrate the life of the late Jack Gregory Chirikjian, PhD, founder of the M.S. program in biotechnology and a professor of biochemistry at the university for 46 years. Attendees of the memorial service included members of his family and countless students, faculty, staff and others whose lives he touched over the years. James Giordano, PhD, MPhil, a professor in the departments of neurology and biochemistry and chief of the Neuroethics Studies Program in the Pellegrino Center For Clinical Bioethics at Georgetown University Medical Center, has been awarded the Academic Gold Medal of Merit by the Coburg University of Applied Sciences in Coburg, Germany, where he serves as a distinguished visiting professor of brain sciences, technology and ethics.

Elizabeth "Brook" Brown, MD, MPH, an assistant professor of urology at Georgetown University Medical Center, has been selected as a 2019 Gallagher Health Policy Scholar by the American Urological Association. Gallagher Health Policy Scholars spend a year participating in intensive training on issues in health policy, receiving mentorship from seasoned physician volunteers, participating in key meetings and conferences and completing educational public policy activities. The honor also includes $15,000 in funding.

In support of an initiative by University Information Services (UIS) to make all Georgetown University websites more advanced and secure, the Office of Communications for Georgetown University Medical Center is working to transition all GUMC websites from Drupal, the current content-management platform, to WordPress. These migrations will allow increased functionality, accessibility and ease of updating your sites. Learn more here

Medical ethicist Daniel Sulmasy, MD, PhD, responds to media reports that stunned the medical and scientific community: a Chinese scientist who claims to have performed genetic editing to create twins girls who are resistant to HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

The low unemployment rate in the U.S. is good news to many people, but perhaps not to residents of nursing homes. A recent Georgetown University Medical Center study found that quality of care in nursing homes improves during periods of recession and worsens when the economy is good.

 




Shavini Fernando (G'18), a graduate student in the Communication, Culture and Technology program who suffers from life-threatening heart and lung damage, won a total of $35,000 at the Leonsis Family Entrepreneurship Prize's "Bark Tank" pitch competition to develop O2Wear, a device she invented that alerts people when their vital signs go out of normal range and calls 911 for help.
