The Power of Our Friends

As spring approaches, I want to thank the wonderful Friends of Eldredge Public Library. Our numbers are growing but we always need more. We are so grateful to those in Chatham and all of our Friends who live way beyond the Town's borders, in fact, all across the United States. We have many visitors during the summer as well many loyal patrons year-round. All of your support, no matter what the amount, enables us to provide some wonderful things for all at our Library.
 The Friends were instrumental in transforming the children's play alcove into an area that is a special place for our little ones and supports early literacy skills. It is currently a vet clinic, complete with dog biscuits on hand to enhance the realism.
We recently revitalized the heavily used computer room (across from the circulation desk). Improvements were made to the computer table which gave the computer users much needed space. We also added an additional station for the wireless printer and a fresh coat of paint.
We are extremely proud and excited about the annual spring Learning Series which begins at the end of March and runs through early July. Our LS committee deserves major kudos for all their work in finding speakers, scheduling classes and registering participants for this enjoyable and educational series of programs.
We are also very proud of our ongoing book sale which is extremely popular, with a steady customer base. The volunteers who run the book sale deserve tremendous thanks for their hard work.
The Friends of Eldredge Public Library work hard to tighten the link between the community and the Library. We thank you for your efforts and support.

The Library is Getting a Makeover!

On Tuesday, March 5 we start a painting project that will include most of the interior of the library. The last time the library received a fresh coat of paint was the 1991 addition.
We do plan to stay open during the two and half weeks, only closing off certain areas as the crew from Cookie's Painting makes their way through the building. The first section to be painted (March 5-8) will include the main entry, Reference room, Fiction, Audio Books, Large Print, Genealogy and the New Book Section. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but we look forward to the improvements.
This project is made possible by our very generous Friends of the Eldredge Public Library! We thank them for their hard work throughout the year and we thank you for being a Friend, attending a Learning Series program, shopping the book sale, and taking part in their fundraising events. Please make sure to visit the library to see our improvements and thank a Friend!

Let's Mock! by Tammy DePasquale, Youth Services Librarian and Assistant Director
Youth Services hosts six book groups each month, with a seventh one in the works. Three of the seven are what we call "mock" discussions. The Mock Caldecott, Mock Newbery, and Mock Printz groups meet regularly at the library and follow the American Library Association's guidelines for selecting the most distinguished contributions to children's and young adult literature. 
The Mock Caldecott focuses on picture books and illustration for children. The Mock Newbery features books written for children up to 14 years old and looks primarily at the text, while the Mock Printz concentrates on books intended for young adults through age 18. With a solid understanding of what it means to be distinguished, each group discusses and debates the monthly selections, all in an effort to select the best titles of the year.
Our process starts in March and ends with voting in late January, when the real committees announce their Youth Media Awards at ALA's Midwinter Conference. We celebrate our efforts and the winning titles in February with a potluck and a guest speaker. Admittedly, there might be a little bit of table slapping or "committee shaming" if our picks are overlooked, but truly we enjoy a year of notable books, lively discussions, and great comradery.

Let the Games Begin!
Don't miss this opportunity to show off your Jeopardy skills! The EPL is hosting another Jeopardy game and we are looking for 8 teams of 2 people each, age 18 and up. All ages are welcome to join us as audience members! Registration forms are available to
download or at the Front Desk with a small registration donation of $25 per team.

Introducing adult trivia night at the EPL! One of our favorite performers, Brett Outchcunis aka "Ooch" is joined by his brother Nik for "Challenge! Trivia" at the library. Brett and Ooch have created their own high-tech, interactive version of a trivia competition that appeals to a wide range of ages. Teams with a minimum of two or maximum of 6 adults are invited to compete. Each team must have at least 1 smart phone. Prizes, snacks and an evening of laughs will be provided!
Registration is encouraged to reserve your table. Walk-ins will be welcomed on a first-come-first-served basis.
