Lenten Retreat "Mindfulness Meditation" March 9, 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Join the Rev. Dr. Mark Cooper for a day of quiet mindfulness meditation. Learn what mindfulness meditation is and its benefits to the whole self - mind, body and spirit - then practice sitting in silence together and reflecting on what arises in the silence. Adult Confirmation Class, 10:15 a.m. starting March 10
This year, our confirmation class has a new model based on the early church's practice of teaching new members during Lent in preparation for Easter. Each Sunday a clergy-led short course on "Episcopal Church 101" (see below, open to all parishioners) will discuss a basic Christian or Episcopal topic. Participants desiring confirmation, reception, or reaffirmation of baptismal vows also will meet Wednesday evenings in small groups facilitated by lay leaders for discussion, Bible study, and prayer.

Are you considering baptism for yourself or your child? Are you expecting a child and thinking about baptism? Our clergy, staff, and Baptism Guides warmly invite you to our one-hour baptism orientation designed to answer important questions in preparation for this joyful sacrament. We address both theological and practical questions like: "What does God do at baptism?" Interfaith Dialogue and Concert with Beth Ahabah, March 24, 3:30 p.m.

Congregation Beth Ahabah and St. James's are excited to partner with the Richmond Choral Society as they present
Yizkor Requiem composed by Thomas Beveridge as a liturgical and musical conversation between Judaism and Christianity. This concert will bring a chorus and orchestra into the historic sanctuary at Congregation Beth Ahabah.

Interested in joining St. James's? Attend two back-to-back sessions - one Wednesday evening followed by one Sunday morning - for fellowship, worship, and basics about life & membership at St. James's. Part 1 is 6:45 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. starting in the Chapel; Part 2 is 10:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., starting in the Gibson Hall Atrium and including worship at the 11:15 a.m. service. Many Christians wonder: how can I live out my faith in the community or the public square? Certainly the answer is unique to each Christian. We will hear from five agencies how they have heard the Good News and translated it into action in our community by caring for our neighbors.
March 13 "The History of Poverty in Richmond"
Dr. John Moeser, a member of Second Presbyterian Church and local expert on the history of Richmond's urban design, tells the history of "the least of these" in our own community to answer the question, "What is Faith-Based Civic Engagement?"
March 20 "Repairers of the Breach: The Bus Rapid Transit Project"
The Rev. Nelson Reveley and Ross Catrow explain why and how faith communities across Richmond have come together to support the GRTC's Bus Rapid Transit project.
March 27 "Resettling Refugees"
Church World Services began immediately following World War II to help the hungry and those in need. John Baumann, Director, Virginia Refugee and Immigration Program, will speak about their work today helping refugees find new homes in our community.
April 3 "Climate Change and Care for the Environment"
The Rev. Weston Matthews, Rector of Grace Episcopal Church, the Plains, works for the Presiding Bishop's Office on matters of faith and climate change. Come learn why his faith motivates him to serve creation and those most vulnerable to climate change, and how this work is unfolding.
April 10 "Health Care for All"
Kim Bobo, Executive Director of the Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy, brings together leaders and communities from many faith communities across the commonwealth to address a variety of social and human rights issues. Currently, their major project is working with the Virginia legislation to provide healthcare for all citizens. Bobo was selected for the 2012 Pacem in Terris Peace and Freedom Award, an award shared with the likes of Dorothy Day, Martin Luther King Jr., Mother Teresa, and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
