It provides seed money to support creative opportunities for community-led projects, events and initiatives that promote learning, understanding, and friendship among our city's diverse residents.

Workplace Culture and Language Training for Newcomers
Mondays and Thursdays, January 14 through February 14, 6 - 8 p.m.

Please join us for a free 10-part course that will help you develop the skills you need to comfortably communicate in the Canadian workplace. Participants need to be able to attend at least 8 of the sessions. Registration required

English Conversation Club
Wednesdays, January 16 - February 20,
9:30 - 11:30 a.m.

In this program, participants will meet to practice their English with a facilitator and community volunteers. New topics will be introduced in each session, allowing participants to practice English in a very enthusiastic and engaging setting. This program is suitable for anyone with intermediate English skills (LINC level 4-6). Participants are required to commit to all 6 sessions.   Registration required

Fighting for Space
Friday, January 18, 7 - 8:30 p.m.

Through the 1990s, Vancouver experienced a drug crisis similar to the epidemic that North America struggles with today. Travis Lupick, author of Fighting for Space: How a Group of Drug Users Transformed One City's Struggle with Addiction, will recount how the city responded and what lessons should be applied now. Urban Homesteading presents:
Apothecary Garden
Wednesday, January 23, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.

In this presentation by botanical pharmacology specialist Anastasiia Dushyna, attendees will explore the exciting world of the Apothecary Garden, its power to cure, as well as plant legends and fairy tales. Make Your Own Paper Airplane

For children in Grades 4 - 7. Are you an expert at making paper airplanes? Join us for some Pro-D day airplane science. Design and create your own awesome paper airplane, and then compete to fly your plane into a target. Registration required.

PREPARE for Babies, Toddlers and Preschoolers
Six sessions in January and February

PREPARE is a literacy-based program that provides children and their parents/caregivers with six core literacy skills for kindergarten readiness: print motivation, phonological awareness, vocabulary, narrative skills, print awareness, and letter knowledge. Register at the Children's Desk.

The Library offers several volunteering opportunities for teens and tweens. Join our Teen Advisory Council, Tween Advisory Group, or the Teen Art and Promotion Group. Join the Read Along program, or help with library events! 

Teen Gaming
Fridays, January 4, 11, 18, 3:30 - 5:15 p.m.

For grades 7 and up. Drop into The Room to play your favourite "E" or "T" rated games for Wii or PS4, or play board games. Bring your own, or use ours. Drop-in

Snack and Chat Day
Wednesday, January 9, 3:30 - 5 p.m.

For grade 7 - 12. What?! There's free food in the Library?! Come to the room to study, socialize, play some board games and share some awesome treats with your friends! Drop-in
   
Board to Death
Wednesdays, January 9, 16, 23, 30, 6:30 - 8 p.m.

For ages 16 and up. Come and play board games! All are welcome and new games are introduced regularly. This is a casual, fun, welcoming atmosphere and you don't have to be good at board games. Usually held in The Room, but check @yunorthshore on Instagram to confirm time and place. Drop-in
 
LEGO Robotics, Part 1
Tuesdays, January 22 and 29 or February 5 and 12, 3:45 - 5 p.m.

For tweens in grades 4 to 7.  You will work in small groups with teen mentors over three weeks to design and build your own LEGO EV3 robot! Please register for Lego Robotics Part 1 or 2 if you have no experience with Lego Robotics, or speak with the Teen Services Librarian if those sessions have passed. Registration required
 
Teen Movie Matinee
Friday, January 25, 3:30 - 6 p.m.

For teens in grade 7 and up. Bring friends and watch a movie in The Room. Refreshments provided! This month, we're showing Darkest Minds. Drop-in
