Industry News
"There exists a widespread assumption that once a corporation uses its industrial fiberglass materials to capacity, the defunct items (for example, the blades of a wind turbine) must meet their end in a landfill. Also widely known is that landfills are filling up, dumping costs continue to rise, and we don't stop needing fiberglass materials for modern industries. Global Fiberglass Solutions Inc. (GFSI) , with its newest manufacturing plants in Texas and Iowa, proves the first assumption wrong and the second assumption newly irrelevant to companies hoping to bypass such issues."

"The "boneyard" is the colloquial term given to aircraft storage facilities where out-of-use planes are sent to be sold, stored or scrapped. Most are in arid locations such as California or Arizona. The one here in New Mexico - officially the Roswell International Air Center - is the preferred facility for American....

Association Update
From James Cobbold, Air Salvage International
Dear AFRA Members,

I trust you all are off to a great start to the New Year. When reflecting back on last year, to my amazement, I have survived yet another high-volume travel schedule which has afforded me the opportunity to frequent from one continent to the next and see both familiar and new faces. From the ISTAT and MRO conferences to AP&M and the Paris Airshow, there are an endless number of industry events applicable to aircraft end-of-life.

While the aforementioned conferences provide the ideal forum to nurture existing relationships and build your network, they also provide a platform for discussion, learning, and a means to better understand our industry for what's going on now and how to best prepare for the future. Most recently I attended the Airline Economics Growth Frontiers Dublin Conference in late-January and sat in on few panel sessions. Specifically, I found the Lessor CEO Panel quite interesting in that each panelist had sound advice in how to manage risk: "Consider the cost of funds and I.R. hurdles, pursue business that aligns with your capital model, and find a value proposition for your customers." The narrow-body versus wide-body debate was also discussed in the panel which there was a consensus in placing narrow-body aircraft as they are considered less bespoke than wide-body aircraft. In addition, the panelists also touched on the growth of the Chinese leasing industry and noted that with new entrants to the market, it will be harder to compete with a higher expectancy and/or pressure on yield. I was delighted to have attended the Airline Economics conference as it provided me with the opportunity to both network and at the same time increase my knowledge of the aircraft leasing sector.

While on the topic of industry events, I would like to remind you all that AFRA's 2018 Annual Conference will be taking place on June 24-26, 2018 in Scottsdale, AZ, USA. As Co-Chair of the Communications Committee, along with Mike Corne from eCube Solutions, we have begun speaker outreach and the program planning. If you are interested in participating, please contact staff.

Best regards,

James Cobbold
